Hi,

In NY, if you temp here or there for day jobs as receptionist or something, can you still receive unemployment benefits?

Posting this here incase someone has done this. Thanks.

Yes you can. You simply declare how many days you worked when you claim your weekly benefits. If it's over $400 then you don't get your check that week, but you can still claim benefits the next week if you don't have an assignment. The system is designed to allow people to pick up whatever work they can.

Also, losing a temp job counts as becoming unemployed. Something I didn't know until I lost my temp job and had to wait a while to get another assignment. The market was really slow earlier in the year. It's picking up a little now.

Hi, I am a designer collecting unemployment. I've taken some short term assignments one recently being a week long gig. Every Sunday I claim and after this job I claimed, entered that I made over $405 and was finished with this job due to lack of work. Which it was unfortunately. UIB stated that I wouldn't receive benefits that week which I understand. I received a letter in the mail asking for info on the company which I gave (they know a letter might be coming and knew to give the reason of lack of work) and answered some other questions (did this before for a two day gig). Anyway it's been three weeks and I've been claiming without having any work and have not received my weekly owed benefits. Why such the hold up?

PLUS: A fellow unemployed friend mentioned he just didn't mention work/report it when he worked and didn't claim for that week. When not working he would go back and claim his benefits. Should I just not mention work and not claim those weeks of work to avoid this long hold up?

Yeah it sucks for some reason it creates a hold up usually only the first time but you should call them up if it persists. Yes you have to report your taxed income when claiming benefits. You have a certain amount allocated to you which is divided for you for 26 weeks. This means that you have an extra a week in the bank that they did not allocate to you yet.
