I'm going to be looking at this place when I go up to New York next month to secure a place to live, and just wondered methods of transportation there are to and from the island, and how long it would take. I'll be working in Times Square (42nd and Broadway), and am wondering what the commute might be like as compared to another place I'm going to look at in Long Island City (called Avalon Riverview). Any help is appreciated.

From Times Square, you would walk a block over to 6th Avenue and take the Queens-bound F train to Roosevelt Island - which I believe is 4 stops away.

The only thing is, the F is in the middle of the island, and the Octagon is at the northern tip... I don't really know that island too well, so I can't give methods of transportation from there, but there must be a bus or something..

So what's the estimated time on this? 10-15 minutes? Not including transportation from The Octagon to the subway station, or vice versa.

According to this (F train schedule), 10 minutes is about right.
