"Governor Kathy Hochul today announced a total of 19 transformational projects in New York City as part of two economic development programs: the Downtown Revitalization Initiative and NY Forward. Ten projects were announced for East Harlem, the Round 6 winner of a $10 million DRI award; four projects were announced for the Garment District, a Round 1 winner of a $4.5 million NY Forward award; and five projects were announced for Far Rockaway, also a Round 1 winner of a $4.5 million NY Forward award.

“New York City is the greatest city in the world and these funds will help to create more livable and vibrant communities,” Governor Hochul said. “Restoring and preserving history is a key part of maintaining what makes New York special, and we are providing the resources to ensure New Yorkers can enjoy these spaces for decades to come.”

Downtown Revitalization Initiative
East Harlem was named the New York City winner of the sixth round of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative in 2023. The ten projects selected seek to cultivate a vibrant, safe neighborhood with supports and grows local businesses, fosters a healthier community, reinforces the neighborhood’s identity through arts and culture investments and supports open space improvements.

New investment combined with past investments will create a robust environment for the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse of historic downtown buildings and infill development that incorporates mixed-income residential opportunities.

The DRI investments are part of the Governor's ongoing efforts to revitalize the economy and create more opportunities in New York City. The DRI is led by the Department of State, which provides technical assistance as each participating community develops a Strategic Investment Plan identifying specific projects with a unique vision for the revitalization of the downtown area.

The specific projects to be funded through the DRI support several goals and strategies contained in the community’s Strategic Investment Plan, such as amplifying the city's unique sense of place with a genuine and authentic experience that will be catalytic for future organic growth and will foster development that is inclusive while embracing its strong heritage and ethnic diversity.

East Harlem joins the communities of Jamaica, the Bronx, Downtown Brooklyn, Staten Island, Chinatown and Long Island City, which were New York City's winners in the first seven DRI rounds.

The $9.7 million state investment in these projects through the DRI will leverage additional public and private investments as the revitalization process proceeds and builds momentum."

well, with Bragg and his soft on crime agenda not many places are safe anymore, especially when we have criminals that have many priors and are still allowed to roam the streets.
so Hochul needs to do some re-thinking.

the city is not safe anymore like it should be.

Gentrification are more effective ways to revitalize areas than government funding. Of course when DeBlasio took office he stopped gentrification in many districts which caused so much criminal elements to remain in expensive parts of the town. He would pay people who couldn't afford to live in many parts of the city just to "revitalize" the area. This is why DeBlasio is quickly forgotten as an effective mayor, even by poor people. He is neither Robin Hood nor Batman. He is more like the Joker.

Unless you are putting criminal people in jail or forcing them out of the area, nothing will make an area safer. No shiny new apartments with expensive electric heat that the tenant has to pay will fix an area.

Usual Hochul BS.

Read between the lines my ninja. These are bribes. Keep voting for us and we’ll share in the spoils. Someone will get that contract and pocket 50% as profit.

Opinion:

Let me get this straight.
N.Y.C. runs out good quality real estate and left with landfills, junkyards, flood zones etc..to build.
Carefully gift wrap it. Add a pretty red bow and call it............a transformational and revitalizing initiative?

Wow!

Where can I buy the tickets to this soap opera ?

Harlem has been in the news for decades as getting better. I lived right on the border not too long ago and attempted using newly opened grocery and shopping services. All were invariably understocked, understaffed and needed much more security than the suburban stores I also shop at. A Whole Foods check out person had a phone in their hand and spent more attention on it than checking me out. Most of those Harlem serving locations are now closed.
Why pump more money into neighborhood redevelopment. Put it into the people who live there so they can stop dragging the quality of life down.
