NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — An investigation is underway in the Bronx after police say a 73-year-old man was found stabbed to death inside his apartment.

Police say Owen Dillard was discovered in his third floor apartment on Beekman Avenue Monday night by his fiancée, who called 911.

When officers arrived, they found Dillard unconscious with stab wounds to his neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said there were no signs of a break-in or struggle.

Neighbors say family members were devastated.

“They were all heartbroken and crying. It was a traumatic experience for them,” said neighbor Kayla Pagan. “I was in shock. He was loved around here and I can’t believe someone would do that to him.”

“That’s very scary. It’s very scary, too close to home for me,” said resident Taquestia Thomas. “He always had a smile, he’s not rude. I never see him disrespect anybody, never.”

Overnight, detectives investigated the building for clues but so far, say there were no signs of forced entry and are still looking for a motive.

“He was 73 years old. You didn’t have to kill him,” said the victim’s nephew, Shabazz Muhaymin. “A lot of people in this neighborhood know him… I’m sure this neighborhood is broken without him now.”

Muhaymin said his uncle won $50,000 in the lottery several months ago, CBS2’s Natalie Duddridge reported.

“He kept some money in the house. The last time that I did hear him winning a large sum of money was maybe six months ago,” he added.

Dillard’s stepson also told CBS2 he recently won several small lotteries and lent cash to those who needed it.

“He shared with everybody,” said resident Jose Sanchez. “He was good to everybody, everyone got along with him. Never had any problems.”

Police say they are searching for a person of interest and they’re now offering a $2,500 reward for information that leads to an arrest.

“Do the right thing and turn yourself in,” Muhaymin said.

The medical examiner will determine the exact cause of death. Dillard leaves behind a son and a daughter.

Lol. Neither that either. I do have to say Beekman and Betances are both rough, but improvements have been made.

If I were the son and daughter, I would be giving a hard look to that fiancee. Unless she, too, is 70+ years old. No forced entry?

This is so freaking sad. They killed him for the money. It was a mistake he didn't change his location after winning the lottery.
