I am relocating to the New York city area with three children ages 8,4, and 1. My husband and I would like to rent for about 2 years. I would love a good public school but would consider homeschooling in order to experience city life. We would like to keep rent at about 3000. A 4 bedroom would be great but 3 would work temporarily. I would love to be able to walk to shopping, restaurants, etc. and give up both cars for a few years. Also, family friendly areas are a must. I love old and quaint with character - but I am a stickler for clean and well cared for. Is this possible? Where would we look - which neighborhoods, etc. I have heard great things about Brooklyn but don't know if we can afford it. Any thoughts, ideas? Thanks!

The best bet is to search craigslist for Brooklyn rentals. Set the max $ at $3000 and min bedrooms at 4 and see what comes up. There should be some decent results, esp in the southern areas.

Since you have kids, I would suggest Bay Ridge which is recommended to me all the time. They supposedly have good schools too.

Another very nice area in Brooklyn is Marine Park. You have the Kings Plaza mall very close by, buses, District 22 which is a very good school district for your young ones.... Beautiful houses, tree lined streets, nice clean park. However trains, you would have to bus it to the trains. We have this thing called metro cards, so you get on the bus and then you get a free transfer on to the trains. Very nice area, you should keep your options open and check out Marine Park. You can rent an entire house with that amount, which also gives you a nice little back yard for your kids to play in. It's totally up to you depending on what you want for your kids.
