Hi, I'll be attending CUNY Brooklyn next fall and am looking for a fairly cheap, safe, but active and "cool" neighborhood with a decent commute to Flatbush/Midwood where CUNY Brooklyn is. I've been to Williamsburg before and eh, it's nice and hip and all, but I don't know if I'd for sure want to live there. I'm 19 so I definitely want an active area with young people. I don't mind a commute of up to 45 minutes, the closer the better of course. Rent is, well, as cheap as I can get, I just want a room in an apartment with other students or trust fund kids, whatever. So what're your recommendations? I've looked at Bushwick and would like to hear more opinions about that also. Thanks a lot!
this cheap and cool neighborhood you speak of within a 45 minute radius of brooklyn college unfortunately does not exist. the cheapest and closest you can get would be flatbush and the neighborhood does have some crime and quality of life issues. you also may be able to find cheap housing in other parts of brooklyn that are somewhat close by, such as sheepshead bay or homecrest, but they dont have the "cool" vibe to them that you desire.

Good points SeventhFloor. I would suggest you look into one of the quieter areas like the ones Seventh suggested, and commute to the cool stuff. You might actually end up preferring that way anyway, in the long run.
The closest thing to what you are describing, that I can think of in the city, are the areas around NYU, which is the Village, and Columbia U., which is Morningside Heights/UWS. Neither of these scenarios really fit your case, unless you are willing to make the Manhattan to Brooklyn commute. How long would it take on average from lower manhattan to the Brooklyn college area? Anyone?
Well, just for a room I suppose I'd want to spend anywhere under $900? Hopefully cheaper. I mean how bad is the commute from Williamsburg to CUNY Brooklyn? I don't mind longer commutes, but I'd prefer to stay in Brooklyn and really do NOT want to live in Flatbush/Midwood by the school. I'm not 30 with plans to start a family and from what I've seen that's the type of area it is.
Yup. Spot on. I like Williamsburg a lot though, but the whole trust fund fake poor hipster thing get a little bit old, that said I know there's lots of people living there feeling the same way and who aren't just living in Williamsburg just to say they do. What's the commute like from Williamsburg to CUNY Brooklyn? Guess it seems like the best option i've seen so far.
you might be able to find a $900 room near Bergen St. in Caroll gardens/Boerum Hill. This would make your commute significantly easier than wmsbug, plus it is pretty hip over there (esp. Smith St.) but less annoyingly hip than williamsburg.
The Bergen St. subway is - I believe - a straight shot to Brooklyn CUNY but you will have to check on mta.info to make sure.
quickest way i can think of from brooklyn college to williamsburg is the B44 bus, but the traffic on nostrand ave can be hell, and the B44 stops at the edge of williamsburg at marcy ave and broadway....so during rush hour that ride can take about 45 mins to an hour
