We are looking at the ruidoso area as a posiible retirement destination. I am an avid golfer, and have some concern about how often i will ba able to play in the winter. Would 2-3 days/week be a reasonable estimate? I'm not crazy, if it's 45 deg. with a 20 mph north wind, i'm OUT
Assuming i could play that often, are there any area's anyone would recommend. Alto looks promising.. My wife doesn't want "remote", so places like Cloudcroft probably wouldn't work. I'm also pretty cheap and don't like relly hot weather, so i don't know if the deset would work..anyway, thanks..
My sig. other plays golf pretty much year round but from what you're saying, you won't be playing golf in the winter because of the temp.
It's colder than that in the winter most of the time.

I had the pleasure of meeting Janice in August 2006. We stayed at her cabins. She and her husband play golf as much as they can. Janice will be able to tell you how often you will be able to golf in the winter. Give her a call.
roryh...Do I understand you to mean that with mid 40s and a 20 mph wind, you are OUT on the golf course, or you do not play? If you meant out on the course:
Ruidoso/Alto: An average of at least 3 days a week in the winter, temperatures will be 15-20 degrees at sunrise. Temps hit 40 about noon, peak in the mid to upper 40s between 2 and 3 pm...and drop below 40 by 5 pm. The sun shines approximately 65 percent off all "available" minutes during the Dec-Feb period.
man, it sounds like it might be too cold to play much in the winter in Alto..I used to live in Denver, and i can remember playing when it was in the 40's, and being pretty pleasant, as long as the wind did not blow, and the sun was shining..it sounds like you get a couple of days a week in the winter that might fit that description?
Thanks for all the input..
The avg high temp is ~48 in Jan and it is sunny most of the time. Wind is highly variable, as is snow. It is probably at least as nice as Denver in the winter... which isn't bad considering that we are 1-3/8s miles high.
roryh...When I said at least 3 days a week...well, there will be weeks when you get 6 or 7 days with temps well into the 40s for a few hours each day. If you played in Denver, Alto/Ruidoso won't be a problem. Afternoon temps average 3-4 degrees higher in Alto/Ruidoso than Denver. Nights average a few degrees colder in Alto/Ruidoso, but the temperatures are more variable in Denver than Alto/Ruidoso. Alto/Ruidoso is not subject to the frequency of arctic outbreaks and subzero temps that Denver gets.
Bottom line...if Denver wasn't a problem for you, Alto/Ruidoso sure won't be a problem.
Also, about 20 down the mountain at about 5500 feet is the Carrizozo golf course. This area tends to be 5 to 10 degrees warmer there so that is an option in the winter (and a cheaper place to live without all the tourists) so I wouldn't rule out Nogal/Capitan/'Zozo either. Of course, the winter driving on 48/37 is an issue to think about as well.
Would strongly recommend spending a good week time there during each of the seasons if you have the time and see what you think!
