Why would you drive from Great Sand Dunes Park all the way to ABQ, when Santa Fe/Bandelier are closer to CO than ABQ? Stay the night in SF, then hit Bandelier the next day. Be sure to check the website for Bandelier before you plan; I think the local tribe manages it, and they sometimes close the park for maintenance, or whatever.
I need to do a bit more research. Thought the Albuquerque area would be worth a trip.
I would hit the Great Sand Dunes, then the museum at Fort Garland, then stay overnight in Taos (and wander the little historical district of Taos). Then hit Bandelier and Tent Rocks the next day. From there, if you have time, visit Chaco Canyon.
So May 2020 I should be hitting your state for the first time. Plans are for me to fly Philly to Denver. Then rent a car and do a bit in Southern Colorado and then some in Northern NM. I think I am going to drive to Great Sand Dunes Park in Colorado on the day I get out there, stay overnight, and then drive the Albuquerque area the next day. Once in NM, Bandelier is top priority. Also Tent Rocks.
???
Bandelier is a National Monument, it's managed by the National Park Service and open dawn to dusk every day of the year. The visitor center is closed on December 25 and January 1. https://www.nps.gov/band/planyourvisit/hours.htm
OK. I read some years ago, that it was closed for repair of some of the old adobe dwelling remains, after an intense weather event and other factors, and that the tribe was involved. Never mind...

You're confusing Bandelier with the nearby Puye Cliff Dwellings. Both sites have been closed in more recent years due to damage from wildfires but as of now, both are in business, AFAIK.

Joqua is right. Just to expand, Puye is owned by the Santa Clara Pueblo, who operate all tourist visits and activities at the site. Most visits are by tour only, and Puye is subject to closure according to the Pueblo's calendar.

YES! Thank you! I thought I may have confused Bandelier with another site, but couldn't think of which one. BINGO!
Will be hitting ABQ area for sure. It's not all that much further south, there are some good places to see and who knows when I'll be back out there again.

So is the whole state! You can stay a couple months and not see it all! I visit friends 3 times a year and will be in Albuquerque at the end of April. New Mexico has national parks and monuments all over the state, the most impressive to me is Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
You want western history? Stay the night at St. James Hotel in Cimarron, about 50 miles south of Raton. Built in 1872, lots of western people stayed there, here's a few--Doc Holiday, Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Annie Oakley, and more. I haven't been there in some time, but you'd love it!
