My Husband and I are looking to buy our first house and start a family! You may think my concerns are premature but we have always been a couple whom plan. For the past two years we have rented a house in the lovely town of Forest Hills NY however the property prices and outdoor area you get for your money is less than we would like ( we like to enjoy our home and spend all our time weather permitted outdoors. So we are looking to move further upstate either, Westchester, Rockland, or New Jersey and possibly the beginning of Orange county. My husband and I do need to be within one hour and a half commute of the city for family and work. Our dream is to be lakeside and as my husband is a builder and I am an interior designer, the thought of a house with a little land to extend and renovate does not scare us, in fact we would love the opportunity to profit from our home in the future. I know we may be asking for a lot, so our main priority would be that we buy in an area that we could stay and raise our new family for at least the next five to ten years, this means good schools, health services, supermarkets, good community, etc... To sum it up we do not want to be completely isolated out in the sticks! After all, families like to be near other families.
If anyone can advise and help us narrow, our search down it would be appreciated. By the way, we would be looking to spend between 500K and 700K. Thank you so much in advance. Emma.
This is not in the areas indicated but have you considered Candlewood Lake in Connecticut? It is the states largest lake and has beautiful homes that I believe are in the price range you indicated. The lake spreads across several towns including Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Brookfield and Sherman. I had friend that grew up there and he loved it. Check it out. Jay

If you have between 500K to 700K to spend then you are right in the range for nice lakefront houses in Morris county.
Mountain Lakes is the nicest but looks like it's out of your price range.
Like the previous post said, Lake Hopatcong or Roxbury seem like the best bets for you. There are plenty of Lakefront towns up in Sussex county also but you don't get the NJ transit up there and it might be out of your commuting range.
Thank you all very much for your replies, we are definitely going to look at those areas. Yes Connecticut does seem at little too far out of commute range but the area you suggested does look lovely. As we mentioned a good school district is our priority so I think we will start with your suggestions there first.

$500-$700k won't get you near to being on a lake in Mountain Lakes, but it will get you lake access and one of the best school districts in the state. Lots are small though, maybe 1/2 an acre if you're lucky.

i'm changing my mind. i neglected to see the "good schools" part of the post. I wholeheartily agree with Mountain Lakes - beautiful place. You could find something in your price range, but it won't be any larger than 2000 sq ft if you're lucky. If you happen to find something bigger, it'll need a whole lot of work.
