I'd like to hear your opinions on metal roofs (vs. asphalt shingle). Prone to leaking - maintenance - dumping snow load - etc.

There are various types of metal roofing. Your more popular styles are corrugated and standing seam. With "proper" installation, leaking shouldn't be a concerning.

Metal roofing can outlive asphalt roofing. Most asphalt roofing will be considered replaceable between 20 and 30 years, where as a metal foot can give good service for up to 50 or more years.

Metal roofing will or can shed snow very quickly and safety issues can be a concern in this area. However, steps can be taken to prevent such an occurrence.

Your main concern with metal roofing is making sure the installation is correct and to manufacturers recommendations. Most problems I have run into concerning leaks in a metal roof system was due to poor or inappropriate installation methods.

At least from what I have read about them, asphalt is cheaper and quieter, but metal is longer lived (50-100 years) and more fire resistant. If it's a country or older house, a standing seam metal roof will certainly look more in character with the rest of the place.

House entrances should always have a small roof over them to provide shelter from the rain and snow while opening the door. This is really needed if the entrance is not on the end of the house.

A properly installed and maintained, paint every 20 years, will last a very long time. Due to the transitory nature of our society, few people want to pay the extra money for a roof they will only use for a few years.

We have a metal roof over a small area outside our breakfast room. Because our gutters right above were improperly covered, everytime it rained rain would come down on this roof. It makes a huge racket. We are taking care of this, but you might want to consider whether you want to listen to extra loud pattering on your main roof everytime it rains.

They are definitely superior for shedding snow and they last much longer. They are also more expensive. For context, we are building a 24x40 addition (the footprint) on our home. A standing seam roof would be about $6k more expensive than asphalt shingles.
