We've been debating this for nearly a decade, with no answer in sight!

Depends on whose rankings you trust, whether they use rate or absolute dollar amount (average or median?), and your actual tax bill will vary greatly depending on which town you live in.

Most clickbait puts NH in the top 5, rarely #1 (NJ and IL tend to lead the pack).

Property taxes in Illinois aren't nearly as high as NJ, HI or NH

Post Hawaii has the lowest rate (0.27%), but average property tax bill is ~$2k because HI also has highest median home value

Last month ATTOM claimed otherwise -- IL in the top five, HI as the lowest rate of all states.

Other states in the top 10 for highest effective property tax rates were Pennsylvania (1.29 percent), New Hampshire (1.28 percent), Ohio (1.27 percent), New York (1.26 percent) and Iowa (1.25 percent).

The lowest effective tax rates in 2022 were in Hawaii (0.30 percent)

Metro areas with the highest effective property tax rates in 2022 were Rochester, NY (2.52 percent); Trenton, NJ (2.24 percent); Rockford, IL (2.07 percent); Peoria, IL (1.96 percent) and Atlantic City, NJ (1.96 percent).
Hawaii has the lowest property tax rate at 0.27%, but because Hawaii also has the highest median home value of all US states, actual median property tax bills (dollars paid annually) is around the national average.

Same with CT !!

Property tax is only one aspect, if you look at total tax burden NH is practically living free compared to the rest of the northeast and better than most of the nation.

Heck, I can't even get the town to charge me the Land Use Change Tax despite turning in the packet twice, getting a phone call acknowledgement from the contracted assessor, and talking to the tax collector three times. I even dropped off a letter to the assessor with the last annual has anything changed form.

Welp, since I just got a bill I guess I can add to this.

A portion of land was obviously taken out of CU as my taxable land shot up almost 20K. I still haven't received the LUCT bill yet, but I know that needs to be blessed off on by the BOS. If I understand correctly, that might be an almost 2K bill for LUCT-we'll see.

I'm also assessed 64K for my unfinished house. This is probably because in my effort to play nice and over communicate with my new town, I included the basic dimensions of the house/garage when I sent in that annual form.

Oh, and if you work in NYC, you also pay NYC income tax.
