I would recommend Seward. It's quite close to Lincoln and there's enough in Seward to keep you from driving to Lincoln every day. It's a pretty nice town, driving through it occasionally. If you want smaller and closer I'd recommend something like one of those small towns on highway 2 such as Syracruse. Or something to the west of Lincoln like Pleasant Dale is pretty close.
