Lee - Just be sure to disconnect your hose from the spigot. Leaving it attached can result in a break in the pipe and you don't want or need that. Also, ice in your hose is a huge pain. I learned the hard way. Once it gets in there, it doesn't seem to want to melt.

Steve, why are saying naughty words here? You should be more helpful to our newcomers.

Steve's right about the ice in the hose and the spigot. You want to make sure it's detached before the first hard freeze.

ICE MELT is basically salt that is sold at Home Depot or local hardware stores that you put on your portch and sidewalk to get ice to melt. If you haven't figured out by now...we tend to get ice and not so much snow. That is also why everyone runs to the store and buys all the milk and bread. About 17 years ago, we had an ice storm for the records and people were without electricity for weeks and some for a month. This is incredibly rare but people still get scared they will be trapped in their houses with children and no milk or bread.

So ICE MELT is basically rock salt. Right? The one thing with that stuff is to be sure to remove your shoes after walking on it. It can eat holes in your carpet.

Rock Salt..... Ah Ok... Thanks and thanks Steve for the warning about removing the shoes. I have a small Honda 2000 generator that we could use in a emergency if need be. Just big enough to run a small appliance and or the refrigerator. (Course if it is cold out side we could use the back porch) ha ha ha.

We also have a 33ft Motor Home that is self contained if need be. But it is For Sale.

I do know from past experience that if you use rock salt on cement, it can cause cracks in the cement.

Since I have pets, I buy the pet safe ice melt called Safe Paw which should be sold at Petsmart. Regular ice melt is not good for their paws. I don't buy the regular kind any longer.

Ice melt is different than rock salt. Ice melt is more chemical in nature and will typically melt ice regardless of the temperature. Salt is just salt will not melt ice in extremely cold conditions.

I googled and found this article which better articulates the point.
