Hello! We are a family of 5 (kids are 4, 3, and a newborn) and have just begun considering a move to Nashville next summer from Western Massachusetts. We would love a walkable neighborhood (walkable to get coffee or ice cream, or to a playground or park), or to be in the city, or close to the city. Schools are important to us, though don't have to be *stellar* for us to consider an area.

Our budget for a home would be about 150,000-250,000 (max) for a 3 bedroom. At least a small yard would be great. We are trying to get a feel for neighborhoods or neighboring towns that we should look at. There's good info online out there, but some real life experience (especially for 2014) would be helpful. Are there neighborhoods in the actual city that would be possibilities? We looked at Hendersonville for a minute because the schools are great and the homes are affordable, and for that we would consider losing the convenience of walkability, but it seems like a trip into the city would be a long drama with traffic, which would not be worth it.

Any advice (and general thoughts about Nashville, and a family moving there) are very much appreciated! Thank you!

Nashville is pretty suburban and there aren't many walkable areas like you are probably thinking of. The East Nashville area has some walkability but parts of it are in transition and I don't know how the schools are. The Vandy/West End/Belmont/Green Hills areas are out of your price range. Most other nicer homes will be in the suburbs (though closer in than Hendersonville). Not saying there aren't some where you could walk somewhere, but it won't likely be a little village neighborhood. But you'd probably get a bigger yard. Here are a couple of links. One showing 3 bedrooms in your price range and another for schools.

Coming down here, you can pretty much find what you need with a lot of different city options if you eliminate the walkable part. I wouldn't call the trip to the city a long drawn out drama. In relative terms to the northeast, the traffic, with a few exceptions, is bad but not wicked bad to put it in Mass. terms.
