I wasn’t going to movie theaters even pre pandemic...but was so stunned about this. I was looking at reviews on Amazon of a movie that is only available to stream for $20. One reviewer who hated the film said he was taken aback by the rental price, but figured he may have spent that much on two tickets, so went ahead with it, and hated the movie. He said that unlike a movie theater where he would walk out and ask for a refund, he couldn’t do this with the Amazon rental.

Is this a thing that people ask for refunds if they deem a movie bad? Bad is a subjective judgment. Other people may not find it bad. I guess it’s like sending a meal back because you don’t like the taste...something else I have never done...only sent back if there was something objectively wrong with it, like it not be8ng what I ordered.

Interesting that you used the example of sending back a meal. I've asked for a refund at a movie theater once, and I sent back a meal once. Both times, it was for the same reason--what was promised, by the televised movie preview and by the restaurant menu, in no way matched the actual product. But I will say that both times, I opted out of the experience very quickly, after about 20 minutes of the movie and after one bite of the meal. I would never watch an entire movie, or eat an entire meal, and then ask for a refund.

No I wouldn't. I would only ask for a refund if the theater was not doing its job, like the film was not shown properly or had no seats. Asking for your money back because you did't like the movie is low class, imo

I don't think I've ever heard of someone demanding a refund because the movie was bad. I certainly have never done it.

On the other hand, I suspect that most movie theaters would comply with such a request simply because it's not worth the hassle and bad will to say no.

Right--I could see requesting a refund if the sound was bad, or someone brought a crying baby into non-kid movie and the theater didn't remove them. If you just didn't like the movie? That's a buyer beware situation. It's so easy to find previews and reviews and interviews about a film in order to make an informed decision, but if you didn't like what you chose, that's tough luck.

I chose the movie, I take the chance I won’t like it. It’s not the fault of the movie theater....maybe different if it was online only. Especially now, when movie theaters have been forced to close down, I would never ask for my money back for that reason.

I have a friend who we refer to as The Friend Who Doesn't Like Anything. TFWDLA. Her husband isn’t as bad, but still, they’re a match made in heaven. Anyway, I’ve never been to a restaurant with her when she didn’t complain and send something back. Sometimes, it’s just because she doesn’t like it, and like I said, she doesn’t like anything. Even she has not ever demanded her money back if she doesn’t like a movie.

I have friends like that too. It got horrible eating out with them. They would order food that noted it was spicy and then complain. It’s almost like it makes them feel alive to do it.

Liking or not liking a movie is so subjective. You would have so many people trying to con the motion picture industry that the profit end of the business would fall under the bottom line.

I know, right? I think it’s a power trip of some kind, too. The last time we went out with them, they were excited to take us to this restaurant they had been to a few times. They requested a certain server, as though they were best buddies. My friend sent her dinner back TWICE. The first time she tasted soy sauce and didn’t like it. The second time her skirt steak was tough, and by the time she got it we were all finished, so they took it off her bill.

I am sure they have gone back there, totally clueless, and that everyone has their number and draw straws to see who has to wait on them.

Thank goodness we live 2 hours away now.

Absolutely. Expecting more for their own poor judgement seems overly entitled.
