I'll just add for anyone reading, from this posters posts it appears she is a young woman. I feel like that gives it much more legitimacy, sometimes when young guys post about not being afraid in a place I don't put as much stock into that because it's not always the same for a guy.

Absolutely not, and those incidents really effected people's opinions in Montreal, no one's forgotten, there was even a popular motion picture about the Polytechnique shooting. The poster clearly was just saying that they checked the statistics after that incident, and it appeared they were statistically safer from homicide back home.
