This might be a good place to mention the fire museum in Hinckley for anyone who has an interest in historical Minnesota disasters.. A good companion piece to that topic of Minnesota history is "From the Ashes:The story of the Hinckley Fire of 1894. The survivor stories are compelling.

There are quite a few stories of the smaller towns around Hinckley, if fact there many
decedents still in the area.

There's something about the upper Midwest and fires.

The deadliest fire in American history was the Pestigo Fire of 1871 in Wisconsin and Michigan's upper peninsula - ~2000 dead. On the very same day, ~500 died in the Great Michigan Fire (lower peninsula) and ~250 in the Great Chicago Fire. All separate conflagrations, seemingly unrelated save for the fact that it was an extremely dry summer. Still, it's odd that they all occurred on the exact same date. Though many hypotheses have been put forward to explain it, it remains unknown if there was a common cause or if it was just coincidence. After the 1871 fires, the Cloquet Fire of 1918 and the Hinckley Fire of 1894 are the next-deadliest forest fires in American history. And the worst building fire in the United States? The Iroquois Theater, Chicago, 1903 - 600+ dead.
