Since fall is knocking at our door right now. I'd like to get everyones opinion as to the best places to go camping when the colors are at their height. I love camping when you can truly appreciate the warming of a nice fire.

The DNR has a fall color tracker on their website once leaves start turning Minnesota Department of Natural Resources: Minnesota DNR. It isn't up now but I expect it will be soon. You can use that to figure out where leaves are going to peak and plan your camping that way.

Your best views will come along the eastern border on MN from the far northern part of the state all the way down to Iowa. My favorite place for leaf viewing would be down around the LaCrosse, WI area. The north shore along the lake is also beautiful.

Try the camp ground at Spirit MT,in duluth.

Lots of hard woods.

it's a good spot to camp when going up the North shore.

The Superior National Forest is a good choice, especially at the edge of the Boundry Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, many of the sites up there are free of charge, small quiet remote and beautiful.

Split Rock Lighthouse state park is quite scenic, I don't know what its fall schedule is.

Thanks for the input so far. Since there are a lot of options I like to hear about everyones personal favorites. Golfgal, I always forget how nice the LaCrosse area is. Thanks for the reminder.

Yes, go down to Historic Forestville and Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park. Camp there (you can bring your horses!) and toodle around the region. Use the campground as your base and bike the Root River trail. So pretty and fun!

Whitewater State Park is beautiful in the summer, I've no doubt it's even more so in the fall.

If you tent grab a site overlooking the sandstone bluffs.

We love to camp in Frontenac State Park in the fall. The leaves are spectacular and you can make forays into Red Wing, Lake City etc. We always visit area apple orchards as well.

I was going to suggest that. I've only done it in the summer, but from what I remember, it would be pretty gorgeous in the fall as well.

Hmm, might be time to plan a little weekend getaway myself

Also, golfgal, thanks for the link the the color tracker...cool little tool I hadn't seen before!
