Now it all makes sense, my butler just transferred here from NYC because he said the pay was poor there.....

JK. What a silly study, it is borderline fake news, which I wouldn't expect from the Economist...

I don't think it's the Economist's fault, I think it's other parts of the news media which misinterpreted and improperly framed what the study was showing. It's perfectly legitimate to run a study on costs for high rollers in various cities. CEO's/big wigs/finance dudes and dudettes are naturally an important part of the Economist's audience. It's not legitimate and is indeed lazy and sensationalist to take a study like this and call it the general cost of living.

It sounds as though housing was not included? Also no telling how each class of goods was weighted (which in theory would have weighted housing, transportation, food, and taxes the highest). I'd love to see the data on this, but anecdotally this does not match up with what I know. Places like Honolulu, Seattle, San Fran, Vancouver, and Toronto would all be higher.
I'd take anything the Economist has to say with a grain of salt. After all, they are the ones that lowered Vancouver, BC's ranking of liveability because of traffic. They cited a highways ongoing major repairs for causing traffic chaos. Only problem was, it was a highway on Vancouver Island, not in the city or near the city of Vancouver. It's like giving Dover in the UK a bad rating because of traffic in France.
