Small Towns in St. Paul or Minneapolis Area? Pop 2000 (Maple Grove: for sale, how much)

I am thinking of moving but I would like the small town feel but still the jobs of a large town. I would be willing to commute 30 or so miles to a large city but would like to live in a town with a population around 2000 or less. I live in a different state so I don't know the small towns in the area.

Most of the small towns in the metro mesh together with the surrounding suburbs so their perspective populations aren't going to make much of a difference. A cities population in the metro is more of a gauge on how much land it owns. Excelsior is a good choice and has around 2,000 people, but it can easily be more busy than Hopkins at 17,000.

Assuming you really want a town that feels like it has 2000 people, Hampton, Vermillion, Elko-New Market, are options in the south metro. There are some towns around 5000 people that would work as well. It will really depend on where you end up working. Once you know that, we can help you narrow down your choices. The nice thing about the Twin Cities metro area, most of the jobs are in the suburbs so that gives you more freedom to live in more rural areas and commute.

It would be hard to find a 2000 small town in the area. But some 20,000-cities such as Hopkins, Hastings, and even Stillwater you can find a small-town feel. If you're looking closer to 2000 people, I recommend Prescott, WI. I believe it is smaller than 5,000 and has a great small-town charm with many things to do just in town. It is right on the St. Croix and has a very nice downtown (in my opinion).

In the northwest metro, Osseo has a population of approximately 1,800, its own thriving main street (Central Avenue) and just 12-miles from downtown Minneapolis. Maple Grove Transit provides express bus non-stop rush hour service to-and-from downtown. Excellent freeway access via US hwy 169 and I-94. The expanding headquarters for Target Stores corporate campus is 2-miles away to the east along MN Hwy 610 and the Arbor Lakes Shopping Complexes are 3-miles to the west.

The community of Hanover on the Crow River south of St. Michael fits your description as do the unincorporated Hennepin County towns of Fletcher , which is just south of Rogers and Burschville which is along Bass Lake Road just west of Corcoran

In the northeat metro, the cities of: Gem Lake , Pine Springs , Willernie , Birchwood Village , Dellwood all have populations under 1,000 residents, have very rural character, nestled along the shores of White Bear Lake and are less than 10-miles from Downtown St. Paul.

Two communities which fit your description that I would not recommend are Landfall Village and Hilltop because residents of those two cities live primarily in mobile homes.

Mendota (not Heights) or Lilydale would probably fit the bill. The problem is with populations that small it's hard to find houses for sale that fit your needs.

Here's a list of towns ranked by population. A few names, like St. Bonifacius and Long Lake jumped out at me. Oh, and Ham Lake.

Besides Hennepin and Ramsey counties, Isant and Chisago counties are places to look. People live there and commute on I35E to the Twin Cities.
