I was wondering if anyone could tell me what this inner ring suburb is like. It looks small on a map but I can't find any posts specifically talking about this community. Can anyone share opinions or personal experiences about the community, it's population, what it is like, has it experienced a decline being and older inner ring suburb? Any other insight would be appreciated...and I am just curious and this is random, not planning a move or anything. Thanks.

Places like West Milwaukee, West Allis, and Greenfield are pretty much indecipherable from the city of Milwaukee itself. West Milwaukee is very blue collar with a decent sized Latino population. Other than that I'm not too familiar with the area.

West Milwaukee is actually a village, and not an incorporated city. Not that it is a big deal, but relevant in describing the area. It is an area of only a few square miles, and yes, it is almost impossible to tell when you leave the city of Milwaukee, enter the village of West Milwaukee and then enter the city of West Allis.

It is a largely blue collar community which is home to Froederdt Malt and several other heavy manufacturing facilities. Many of the homes are wood frame, and very similar to those in Milwaukee, including the lot size of the individual properties. It is a combination of bungalows and duplexes.

Forty-third street is a major north-south road the crosses the east end of Miller Park. The area to the south of National avenue has seen some revitalization, as there is now some newer stores and restaurants in that corridor.

It is a self-reliant city, in that it has it's own DPW and police force, but relies on the city of Milwaukee for fire protection and emergency medical service, on a contract basis.

All in all it seems like a decent little community. I have worked there numerous times and drive thru the area on a daily basis. There are virtually no board ups, and crime is a minimum.

As someone who lived in West Milwaukee for 4 years I can tell you the first thing I learned when I moved there was "It's not West Allis It's West Milwaukee and it is nicer than West Allis". This is what i was told from the lifers and I agree, majority of the homes and yards are well kept due to and overzealous village government than will repaint your gutters for you if they are chipping and not major chipping but chipping in the least bit. West Milwaukee also has very high property taxes which helps keep the riff-raff out and I believe this is their thinking.

Most of it is clean industry, the malt factory is still there but was bought out by USA - Our malting plants - Who we are - Malteurop. Crime is very minimal, and the cops are very watchful. If I had to chose between West Allis or West Milwaukee, it would be west Milwaukee. West Milwaukee has some very nice brick homes found between Burnham and Greenfield Ave.

No decline, and just b/c it is an inner-ring suburb I don't know why one would think that just b/c it is inner-ring that it might be declining. River hills, Whitefish Bay, Shorewood, Glendale, Greenfield are all inner ring suburbs and range anywhere from the most expensive place to live in the state to above average standard of living.

Milwaukee is unlike Chicago or the other major cities which have bad inner-ring suburbs, all of Milwaukee's suburbs are nice , quiet, safe and clean. Some are more prestigious than other and some have misconceived perceptions about them that are unwarranted.

Hope this helps.

Like you said, a lot of inner ring suburbs in Chicago had aged and I didn't assume Milwaukee's would be any different, that is interesting to know.

Since people say it is similar to West Allis, or "better" than West Allis, what are the differences? Is WA experiencing decline? I don't know anything about this city either, just that I have driven by it on the expressway when I have seen the Brewers play.

WA is not in decline, it's just West Milwaukee doesn't have the 80's mullet stigma and WM let's WA know that. West Allis doesn't deserve the stigma it receives but people at the bus stop and the local walmart would disprove otherwise. West Allis would be like the east side of Madison, not bad just not looked upon in a prestigious sort of way or classy. WA and WM are safe and clean and have nice middle American bungalows. West side of West Allis could be confused for New Berlin which is nicer looking.

Just take a google maps tour and you will be able to see what each city is like. Just curious what is a madison poster so curious about a MKE suburb?
