I'm currently living out of state, but am looking at possible employment with the State of Michigan. I was just curious if anyone on here is a current or former State employee and what you liked/didn't like about it. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Former state employee. Not much in the way of security. Retirement is also a gamble.

All depends on the department you're aiming for and who is in the administration at the time. As previously stated, it is a gamble.

Retired State Employee (fortunately on the old pension plan which is history for new hires). I'd say it's pretty good work overall but, yes, it depends on the department. The benefits have been trimmed somewhat but nice vacation time and higher wages than most states pay. Cost of Living in Michigan is below average as well.
