ok now I can see what winter is like in michigan. Even though I am told this is still mild. But I love it and so getting accustomed. But what I really like is how the roads are treated. When I was in Atlanta any snow when cause the city to shut completely down and the roads were never treated well so you stayed in the house until it all melted. But this morning on my way to work the roads were clean, no slick spots, no traffic, no accidents. I really appreciated that so kudos to the workers that treat the roads so well when it snows

Usually salt is used. Recently in some areas they've been pre-treating roads with brine (salty water). Supposedly it uses less salt, spreads more evenly, and stays in place longer.

Some places in the south are experimenting with pickle juice. I think it has a proper name as it is closely related to brine I believe.

D&D, if this is your first winter, please report back after 3-4 really "normal" winters and let us know how the road commission is doing.

You'll find some area's are much better than others in taking care of the roads. Some take care of them faster as well. The real bummer in Michigan is watching the roads fall apart when it's cold, then thaws, then cold then thaws with rain in a short period of time. My compute to work changed drastically in a matter of days.

That is especially true in the Saginaw Bay. The water is pretty shallow so it becomes painfully obvious when there isn't enough water in the lakes. I'm sure it doesn't do the water table any good either. It's sad to see.
