With the Megasite expected to bring over 5,000 + jobs directly east of Shelby County. Allowing not only Shelby County, but Oakland TN & Jackson TN to benefit from those jobs, and the after affect of additional jobs and housing.

Could this help possibly make Jackson TN one day combine with Memphis's Msa. Also, could Oxford Ms as well, which shares the exact time distance from Memphis as Jackson does. Job growth with Marshall County Ms have been coming along longer, and could go further south.

What's your thoughts?

I do not think that either will become a part of the Memphis MSA anytime soon, if ever.

Haywood County (where the megasite is located) has lost around 40 percent of its population since 1940. While this Ford announcement is huge news, I don't think it's going to turn West Tennessee into a booming metro area like some people think. It will definitely improve things and might even reverse some of the population loss that's been occurring there for decades. And I am glad that the good people in West Tennessee have some good economic news to hang their hats on for a change. But just like the Toyota plant in Blue Springs MS hasn't caused North Mississippi to boom (and hasn't caused any additional N MS counties to join the Memphis MSA), I don't think the Ford plant will cause West Tennessee to boom, either. But it's still great news.

Thanks on the input. Those two cities are the closest small towns outside of Memphis MSA, but not too far where possible growth could expand either way. The region would need more job growth in the surrounding counties.

Going to be a long time. I mean you're talking 75 solid miles from city center to city center.

This "Megasite" excepted, Memphis is not growing that dramatically. In fact it is not really growing at all, I think latest census shows it is shrinking in terms of population.
Most of the growth is to the south over the border into NW MS.

Exactly. Memphis is not growing enough for its metro to expand that far north or south. If anything, it's stagnant at best and shrinking at worst, and has been for years now. And it really doesn't appear that that will change anytime soon.

At best Jackson and Memphis *May* form a CSA one day. I don't want to derail the thread and mention other cities but Jackson and Memphis are about as far as the National Capital and that big city in Maryland, or That City in Florida with the Theme Parks and That other big Florida city next to the bay, Or the Texas capital and that other big Texas city with the Alamo
....if Those cities haven't formed a single MSA unlikely Memphis and Jackson will

With this new Blue Oval City Ford Announced, which Ford said is the biggest Single investment in it's history, It will be interesting to see which MSA Haywood County would eventually Fall in. Blue Oval City straddles the edge of the Memphis Metro and is named after Memphis ie "Memphis Regional Megasite" but officially it's not in The Memphis Metro because Haywood County is not a official part of Memphis Metro Area, if this Thing Blows up like everyone says then Haywood would eventually fall within the official Memphis Metro.....But Haywood County is about 30-40; minutes from Memphis.....It's Right Next door to Jackson however, and Also Blue Oval said it's labor pool would pull from both Memphis and Jackson, So Haywood County could possibly fall within the Jackson MSA instead....But All Memphis And Jackson could do is form a CSA

Memphis and Oxford is different. Oxford and Lafayette County are Right on the door step of the Memphis Metro, Oxford Joining the Memphis Metro is far more likely than Memphis and Jackson, Not sure if it would happen tho, I think it will eventually happen may take some time though.the earliest it could happen is a few years from now (2023/2024) when the Census redraws MSA maps based on the 2020 Census .But it could take decades if ever. Most of Memphis' "Growth" takes place in DeSoto County and Mississippi actually as others have said, and Lafayette County (Oxford) is also one of the fastest growing counties in Mississippi, I would Argue Memphis actually Needs this one to Happen. If Oxford (Lafayette County) Joins Metro Memphis Area, Memphis Growth Rate would then be boosted by two fast growing counties and it's growth would be less stagnant

But it's still along shot, Although right next door to the Memphis Area Oxford is still about a hour away, and. Also you don't see many Lafayette County car tags in Memphis

Verdict: Oxford is One County Away and Jackson is about Two counties away from Memphis, Jackson joining Memphis Metro numbers, No Way, Jackson is too far, and Growth from Either Metro is not strong enough, Blue Oval City May Connect their Labor Markets and Maybe A CSA in the Distant Future. Memphis and Oxford Possible but Unlikely, By Proximity Very Possible, Oxford could be Added to Memphis Metro numbers as early as 2023 but Oxford's big thing is Mississippi's Flagship University, That's the Real Reason it's growing , As such Its economy doesn't Rely or Revolve around Memphis and Unless 25% (the Minimum required by The Census) of Oxford commuters skip out on Ole Miss and Drive 1 hour each day instead to Memphis or At Least DeSoto County for work, Then Oxford will not be added to Memphis Metro Numbers,

30-40 miles seems to be the general limit for cities to be under the same MSA. 60-90 miles just seems a bit too far away.

Even though Oxford/Lafayette County is growing, the Memphis metro area isn't expanding in the way to consolidate with Oxford. In fact, Marshall, Panola and Tate counties lost population in the latest census numbers from 2020. We will see in future years what kind of impact I-269 will have on suburban expansion in the area.
