Last of the 1 Room School Houses (Bangor, Yarmouth: schools, live, land)

Both Shirley and Rockwood Schools close permanently this month. They are the last of the 1 room school houses left in Mainland Maine.

How sad for those communities. I went to a 2 teacher, 8 grade school in grades 1-6. I learned much more than I did when I moved into a large, more modern inter city school. With current economics I understand why a school system would make this move.

Yeah, I think the smaller ones are able to devote more time to each child.

Sad that a piece of history will be gone.

I'm also sad to hear that Goodwill-Hinkley is on it's way out. They've turned a lot of kids around, and gave them an opportunity to become productive citizens over the years. Sighhh...

The small but lovely lending library in Lovell (across from the fire dept) used to be a one-room schoolhouse.

The way consolidated schools keep turning out uneducated students perhaps we should go back to one room school houses everywhere!

I took some pictures of my great grandfathers one room schoolhouse right on route 7 just a couple miles from Dover going south. My great great grandfather lived right across the street so there were no stories of my great grandfather walking miles and miles to school every day. Here are some pictures I took just last fall.
















Times gone by. I don't think this old schoolhouse is on any historical registry to be saved. I believe it was used for other purposes. Still standing. But probably not too much longer.

Of course this doesn't compare to the Shirley school but just another example of a different time.

This looks very similar to the old one room schoolhouse my friend's family had on their land in Yarmouth. We used it as a place to fix up our mini-bikes and dirtbikes when we were kids. The town eventually bought it from the family and moved it to the old brick schools on Main Street. They fixed it all up and now it is a historical place.

I think so. The unions and administrators of the world might not agree. Goodbye cush jobs!

A visit to an 1800s one-room re-enactment at a big museum was an eye opener.
One thing that sticks in my mind was where they divided the kids into four groups, all either reciting or singing something different. First one started, then the next, then the next...it was an exercise in concentration. Given today's concentration levels--excepting texting of course--it seems like it would be a useful exercise.
