There will be road work starting on the Canadian side this summer. They're widening the highway from Lepreau to Saint John. Also remember to allow for crossing time, and NO unfortunately, the new bridge won't be done.

The road from Ellsworth to Calais is ROUGH, bumpy and in need of repair! Couldn't tell you about it in the winter....frost heaves.....it took me a little over an hour from the Canadian side of the border to get to Saint John. That is a neat town. Their rush hour is called a rush minute. They rolled up the sidewalks at dark when I was there. We took the ferry from Saint John to Digby. Notice I spell out Saint instead of St. A local informed me that St. John's was in Newfoundland, and that Saint John was in New Brunswick!

agreed! You'd NEVER know that was Rt 1 if it weren't for the signs. It's a disgrace.

I was wondering about that. The speed limit signs around here are downright confusing. I didn't know that St. John was so close. Is that where they have the winter festival with the ice sculptors?

Can anyone recommend a good hotel in Bangor for the first leg of the trip? We hope to make it from Western VT to Bangor in one day and then Saint John the next.
We belong to Choice Privlidges (Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, Sleep Inn etc) and Starwood (Sheraton). I'm thinking near the mall would be good (I love to shop!). Any recs?
How about Bar Harbor? We like hotel/motels and would prefer to be right in town. Kid friendly is needed too.

There are many, many motels on Odlin Road near the airport. It'n not really near the mall, but it is close to the route you would probably use coming into Bangor.

the comfort inn is near the mall, the econo lodge is off the highway, along with ramada, holiday inn and a few others. i've stayed in al but the econo lodge, all what you expect for the price range, nothing fancy, but a good place to stop for the night my personal favorite is the country inn at the mall, its not a chain, but very clean and quiet and rates are usually a bit lower. if you want to venture to ellsworth for the night, there is a comfort inn and a holiday inn there as well.

I think it was the Travel Lodge in Bangor that was voted one of the worst in the country. so just don't stay there. The Comfort Inn in Ellsworth is very run down, the Holiday Inn is a little better, just needs some remodeling. It looks like you would have a lot more choices in Bangor, just choose carefully.

Last time we stayed in Bar Harbor we spent a couple of nights at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel - it's within walking distance of just about everything. We liked it.

Time before that we stayed at the Bar Harbor Manor - again, within walking distance, and a nice spot.
