Hunting season is here! (camp, club, food)

We're off to the great north woods for a week of partridge hunting next week.
It's our annual bird hunting trip and we've looked forward to it every year for the last 30 years.
Some years are good, some not so good, but we go anyway.
We camp out with tents and eat partridge cooked every way you can think of. Naturally there's beans and hotdogs for back up in case the birds are scarce. Nights by the fire, reflector oven biscuits, millions of stars over head! You can't beat it!
It's a great way to start the season and gets us all excited and ready to hunt deer next month.

I've seen one partridge in three days. There's one here that I hear drumming but I won't be taking that one. There are so few here this year that I might skip the season. I'll take my dog out just because she enjoys it but we'll take pictures instead.

Do you use a dog? I have never gone bird hunting, I have never eaten partridge or any kind of game bird before. It sounds like a great time. How do they taste?

they're definitely well camoed! I almost didn't see this one last weekend at all

In upland bird hunting, a dog is always used. As Molly's picture shows, the birds are well camouflaged, and you could walk right by a number of them. But a dog can smell them, and 'flushes' the bird into flight for the shot. Also, the dog can be trained to get the bird for you, as upland hunting usually involves a lot of thorny brush, and is not fun to walk through.

Game birds taste wonderful! Every fall, my club has a pheasant shoot. Those birds are raised in confinement, but we also hunt grouse ('partridge' in Maine) on club grounds, and the flavor is like food from supermarkets used to taste long ago, but tastes like paper now in comparison!

i dont use my dog,some people do use dogs.you should try bird hunting its not like deer hunting with a deer its easyer to get with a bird you can walk right up on them and not see them then poof they fly up and gone.skeet shooting is good practice for birds.

The nuts are plentiful and meaty. Now we need a hard freeze to drop 'em. The rabbit have been feeding on the acorns, but partridge are scarce this year. Even though the spring was dry and warm, the rain came while the chicks were small and it appears the mortality rate was high.
