I Kayaked the Moose River Bow trip from Holeb Pond near Jackman all the way around to Attean pond last July and I must say that despite fairly dry weather (only rained a few hours out of 3 days), that I got EATEN ALIVE by mosquitos!! No black flies though.

I was wondering if this is typical of up there (2nd week of July) or if last summer was worse than normal for bugs.

I would have expected this in late May or June, but by July I would have thought it would be managable.

Any thoughts?

Oddly enough, this was a light year for bugs.

Agree with AustinB - the bugs were better this year.

bad is subjective,
depends on wind, time of day, where you are, what repellent you use, ect.

Mosquitos can be very very thick, even if you use repellent, I've tried fishing at night before, and get swarmed, to the point of them flying in your eyes, nose, mouth, gets maddening.

The worse bugs are the may/deer/horse flies, they buzz around your head, and over two of them can make you go insane

The mosquitoes were worse than usual in my part of Maine this summer. They didn't let up until it was ghastly hot and are still going today. On November 9, 2011, I got a mosquito bite while bird hunting.

I found the mosquitoes light this year, but the black flies worse.

Here in Corinth, mosquitoes and black flies seemed about normal but it was a REALLY bad year in the flea dept. the first year that we have been here where they got ahead of our normal control routines. just getting back to normal now.
