It looks like whites will be the minority long before 2057. On the chart posted earlier, it says that the hispanic population will surpass the white population by 2020, only a short time away.

Global warming in the case of PV? Malibu is so disaster prone that any number of things could destroy it.

If things get as bad as you think, there won't be any sprawl. And only the wealthy will be able to drive private cars by 2020, much less 2057.

There has NEVER been any time in L.A.s history since it became part of the US that it has had a majority who were born there. California as a whole has had the same percentage of non-natives (66%) since the Civil War. No L.A. mayor in the 20th century was born in L.A. (Hahn was the first L.A. born mayor since Pio Pico). Now, if things do go to complete crap, people from elsewhere will stop coming. There's a reason why New Orleans had fewer immigrants pre-Katrina than any other US city. There's a reason why Detroit and Cleveland are no longer major destinations for immigrants.
I would see LA as becoming like Mexico City, Rio or other huge cities.

I dont know why all the reasons Detroit declined. Certainly the huge decline of the auto industry has played a big role. A collapse in the role of manufacturing in this country. Add to it, political will, climate? I dont know.

The weather, the variety, beaches, mountains, those wont go away even if mexico takes over. If illegals keep coming in and having kids, and if its better than whats across the border, there will be more people. It might be a shanty town, but it'll still be more prosperous than the worst areas of mexico or latin america.

PV, Malibu, those would get smaller, just from an exit of the rich, and increase of the poor. Look at how the middle class neighborhoods have changed, just in 20 years. Beachfront areas will always be pricey, but maybe rolling hills, the area up near mullholland in the mountains, who knows. And maybe by then, the fires and mudslides will have kicked alot of people out.

LA could fall alot and still be a better opportunity for mexicans than mexico. Thats why I see it falling so much. If it's 8 to 1, 10 to 1 now, it could fall it 3 or 4 to 1, LA falls in half.

And theres still open area...I joked about the suburbs in barstow, but who could have imagined where the suburbs are now 30 years ago? And if transporation gets better, its possible. New high speed rail way?

Does anyone seriously think Mexico will acquire land in California? Does anyone think the US Government will allow a foreign country to acquire land loaded with dozens of military bases?

(Though this sort of thing does actually exist with Guantanamo Bay Navy Base in Cuba and Ramstein AFB in Germany and others...)

It's actually sort of common:

Navy Bases Overseas

Well might be like this...
Look at the Los Angeles of 1947.....and then L.A. today...
So from 2007 to 2057? Almost certainly it WON'T get 'better'.....

Last edited by Coffee Mate; 11-26-2007 at 08:01 PM.. Reason: ...or even the L.A. of 1900 to the L.A. of 1947....

If you all think Los Angeles is such a bad polluter, check out Shanxi, China or Norilisk, Russia. Im pretty sure you will all change your state of mind of how "polluted" Los Angeles really is.

Los Angeles is the most air polluted city in the United States primarily due to the fact that it is in a very inconvenient position half the time. The average temperatures are around the 70's, average wind speeds are around 6 mph, and it is sunny and rainless most of the year. All of these factors contribute and are usually are the main reasons why smog exists in L.A. more often than other cities. Im sure that if Chicago or New York had this type of climate and amazing weather, they would be ranked worse than Los Angeles.

I mean, sure there's a lot of cars, but come on people. It's as if the tourists come to L.A. and they immediately look for smog. Pollution is a problem, but not just in Los Angeles, in fact Los Angeles isn't quite as bad as most people think.

In Los Angeles, it's called smog, in other cities, it's called fog or haze, or better yet mist, but it still smells the same.

I tend to hold this view as well. However...when The Big One hits, how much of Los Angeles will actually still be left standing? And how bad will the traffic problems be?
