Are you using oil for hot water? How much oil do you use now that you don't need to heat the house, only need to heat the water for daily use?

I have this old oil boiler with a dirty/clogged coil, that causes the water pressure to be very very low. I was told that to replace the coil would be about 1000 bucks, which is money I could save for gas conversion.

I dont know what direction to turn on this....

I dont have the money to switch to gas at the moment.

I don't want to invest in an electric hot water heater because I will eventually switch to gas and would much rather use gas for hot water.

If I purchase a new oil boiler for both heating and hot water, will it be cheaper since it would be a new more efficient boiler?

A new oil boiler may cost 3k, which is money I could use to put towards converting to gas.

Like gas, oil use during the summer is minimal.

We were in a similar situation in that our old boiler needed a $1k fan to keep running, but all new equipment (it was over 25yo anyway) would be around $6k after rebates. We opted to do the latter.

If your only problem is the water pressure (not really sure how a boiler can cause that), I would keep on saving until you can convert.

Will it be cheaper with all new oil equipment? Not that much imo. I wouldn't do it.

If there is gas in the house, I would install a gas fired water heater.

If not, ask about a having an indirect water heater installed with the current furnace. I believe you can use the same unit when you convert to gas.

These guys helped me. Cheap and it works well. Not a miracle but definitely had hotter water after. Your old boiler prob. has a 5 gallon per minute flow rate originally when it was new. After years of wear it's closer to 3-4gpm. All gummed up it's probably below 2gpm which means your shower is chilly before the shampoo gets on. Their cleaning will get you back to 3+gpm or more. Not the greatest but noticeably better for $100 or less. Definitely worth a shot before changing the coil for $1k+ (often a nightmare that leaks after) or the whole boiler for $5k plus.

While we were waiting for Oil to gas conversion, we used up all the oil (ordered thru codfuel.com), and getting Diesel oil from gas station on weekly basis. On average, I used 3 Gallon per week, and I put the thermostat on the water heater to the lowest possible (95-100 i think). That is for a family of 5 people that shower daily (no bath). so about $40-50 each month.

HOT WATER PLUS
HOT WATER PLUS did an incredible job for us. The water is so powerful now that its damn near therapeutic lol. The gunk that came out of both the coil and piping system throughout the house was terrible. For $200.00...100 for the coil and 100 for the entire house, it was money well spent. The hot water pressure is just like the cold water and it is hot.

Call around for an electric hot water heater. 50 Gallon probably would cost you about $500 plus the cost of install. 40 gallon obviously less.
***Right now based on a family of 4, (2 adults, 2 children) i'm paying about $20/week for hot water use.

Glad to hear it worked for you, too.
