I'd be curious to see what folks think about earnings and buying power on LI.

Are we talking about an individual person earning $100K with a job ON LI or living on LI earning $100K?

I would say that yes, it is a lot of money. Just because so many people on Long Island don't make anywhere close to that each year.

I do agree with the above post, if I didn't make a great income I would seriously think about relocating. But, personal preferences aside, I think it is a lot of money for one person to make here.

Talk to employment agencies on LI and see how many jobs they have that are offering $100K and up. Look at all the websites with jobs on LI and see how many listings they have for jobs that are offering $100K and up. Now you tell us how common the $100K jobs are on LI. I would say the more common the jobs are, the less likely it is a "large" salary for this area.

My question this: Is the person earning the salary at a job ON LI or are you asking if $100K is a large salary for someone living on LI (they might work in the city, NJ or CT)?

I replied "NO", but I do think several factor need to be considered. 100k for a single person could be nice and comfortable. But a standard family of 4, out of the question.

Look at property taxes. If you find a house with $12k in property taxes, that's $1k per month out the door before you do anything. Add in a mortgage, insurance, transportation costs... A single person can do it but with a family it will be tricky.

A single person, as said before, no problem. At all.

A childless couple, still no problem.

Once the kiddies arrive on the scene, uh-oh. Nowhere near enough - kids cost plenty - last time I heard recently, raising a child from 0 - 18 years old costs $250K. This doesn't include college costs.
