My dad lost his $9,000 deposit at that auction.

Buyer beware!

Read the article. Do not participate in Auctions, with a reserve. Some of these Auctions have only sold 2% of their homes. As the srticle states, they are allowed to use schills.

A better road to travel would be ...

Through referrals (ask here if you wish) find an informed realtor.

Via your bank or a mortgage broker (ask here for referral if you wish) become prequalified.

Have the realtor narrow your search by area, size of home, price range, etc.

Take the tour with the realtor and make your offer. This offer can be as low as you wish.

So, isn't making the offer the same as an auction without the pressure?

There's a reason people have auctions, even on personal items, rather than simply having a yard sale. Its the excitement, the peer pressure, auctioneer pressure, etc, etc, etc. There are only two ways to win at an auction. Find that item during the pre-auction period that no one else recognizes as a treasure. Or, go in with the attitude that you're only gonna buy an off beat item no one else wants, for fun. That's not much of a way to buy a house.

Houses don't tend to be unique undiscovered treasures. If they are, some realtor in the know will have already secured it for a savvy investor they know. Houses are also not off beat items.

Stick with the traditional trail and you'll get a better deal with much less anxiety.

Get a buyers agent.
The reason I don't shop at malls is because of pressure. Wouldn't want to shop for a house that way. Trust us on this
I just bought a three bedroom 2 bath home in a great area with so much help from my buyers agent. I had no idea what I was getting into before she walked into the picture.
Good luck
