I'm very disappointed in the state line. I understand it's not Las Vegas proper, but let's be open-minded here. It's less than 3 hours from Rancho Cucamonga, and quite frankly I feel the Indian casinos like Morongo and Pechanga are a rip off.

That being said, sometimes you're in the mood for Nevada but you're not in the mood to deal with the Strip. Enter the state line! An admittedly lacking, yet novel approach to doing a piece of Vegas. Heck, they even name it's street S Las Vegas Blvd.

Generally I pull in there on my way to Vegas, if not just for the gas station, maybe to go into Buffalo Bills and just get "in the mood" and give em a quick slot pull or something.

Sometimes we would even stay there, until now. It's so cheap during the week or weekend, it's just a quick little getaway. The last time we were there, it just seems like they don't care. The hotel hallways are worn beyond belief, Primm Valley buffet is horrible, and now they closed the only relatively decent buffet there, Miss Ashley's, at Buffalo Bills! Why?

They really should invest in that area. Las Vegas is a world-class city with world travelers entering it. Sometimes those travellers are in a rental car coming from L.A., they should have a decent experience upon entering Nevada.

As I get a little older, I start to care less about the party and more about the aesthetics. Vegas is cool but definitely changing. I'm thinking right now that Laughlin is an attractive alternative. The only thing I wish about Laughlin is that they offered some of the food that Vegas has.

Well, the state doesn't own the mall/hotels nor does the city of Las Vegas.

Clearly the place isn't making enough money for renovations or they would already be in progress.

I am referring to the owners, not the state

Just being thorough. I wasn't sure if you were thinking it or not.

Also, I would very much like a 69 charger.

Obviously your neighbors and fellow Southern Californians do not agree with your assessment. The place was bleeding money for almost a decade. Its now eeking out a profit due to higher room rates and resort fees on the Strip and from the massive traffic jams seen on I-15, but by no means is it printing money as it was doing before tribal gaming started eating their lunch. The occupancy rates are still in the basement and realistically only one of the three hotels are needed, hence many of the rooms are actually never opened. The current owners of the place have never built anything significant and are pretty much experienced only in operating weak assets effectively, which means they mostly cut costs and promote to the lower end of the market, such as they do with their other property Silver Sevens. They did announce Whiskey Pete's has had its rooms refreshed, basically a first for the property on decades so maybe that will catch your fancy, but they certainly aren't doing a top to bottom redo of all 3.

So unless you hear the property is sold to some other casino operator you might accept its not going to change. MGM owned the places long ago and even they didn't see any value in doing much more than putting in the mall.

Some interesting info on Whiskey Pete's from Wikipedia:

The area originally was owned by a gas station owner named Pete MacIntyre. Pete is believed to have had a difficult time making ends meet selling gas and had resorted to bootlegging. Primm history remembers him as "Whiskey Pete."

When Whiskey Pete died in 1933, legend has it that he wanted to be buried standing up with a bottle of bootleg in his hands so he could watch over the area. Whiskey Pete's unmarked grave was accidentally exhumed while workers were building a connecting bridge from Whiskey Pete's to Buffalo Bill's (on the other side of I-15). The body was moved and is now said to be buried in one of the caves where Pete cooked up his moonshine.

Whiskey Pete's was opened in 1977 by Ernest Jay Primm as the first of the casinos to be located at what was then called State Line.

I remember that place from the early 80's and there wasn't much to it. You couldn't even get there (then) unless you drove to Jean and turned around because there was no overpass. We stayed out there once when the Primm Valley Resort was still the Primadonna.

There are a couple of golf courses out there now that are supposed to be pretty nice. I would like to check those out one of these days.

It is the same street all the way to downtown.

It doesn't really connect though. It ends in Jean unless you have a vehicle capable of off roading in the desert.

I wouldn't recommend stopping in Primm for anything. The gambling is bad. The prices of everything from gas to fast food is excessive. The town is nearly deserted Monday through Thursday with many things closed. The only value it has is the location . Maybe the mall is decent. I've never bothered to check it out after seeing the prices of everything else in town.

The only casino I find more useless is the old Goldstrike in Jean. I think the same company owns that, too.

I've wondered where the people that work in Primm live. Surely there isn't enough housing in the old MGM employee development. What a nightmare of a commute on weekends from Las Vegas or Sandy Valley. I suspect they pay those employees well. That would explain the high prices.

The mall is nice, but it's no better than the two we have that aren't an hour away.
