Looking for a town to retire to. Besides checking out the carolina's, looking west also. Heard from people that have visited, Henderson might be what we are looking for. Does anyone have an opinions one way or the other. We need to consider taxes, cost of living, insurance costs etc. Other than Vegas, which we have no interest in, what kind of recreation is there? Thanks for all the help

Uhh hate to tell you this...but Henderson is Vegas.

Las Vegas as popularly known consists of four cities and a big piece of the County of Clark. The strip for instance is in no city..just in unincorporated Clark County. The cities in the Las Vegas Valley are Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City.

All are basically interchangeable except Boulder City which marches to a different drummer. The don't allow gambling in Boulder City for instance. Boulder City is very nice and very expensive. Apple Pie Indiana sitting just outside Glitter Gulch.

There are various places in the Vegas area to which you may chose to retire. There are a set of Sun Cities and similar which are very nice. Some are in Henderson and some elsewhere. The best in my opinion are not in Henderson.

If you want a different life style you can consider Pahrump..which is cowboy and redneck. Or Overton/Moapa which is pretty rural. Or Mesquite which is remote Vegas. Or cross over the river into Arizona...the redneck capital of the SW.

Hi , thanks for the imput...havent check'd out the site yet, but what in your opinion is there to do , minus the Vegas scene, for a 50ish couple with grown kids? How do your utility bills run? Heard it could be high...also, car insurance and your general cost of living. we will be moving from a coastal community on the east coast.

Thanks, we heard Boulder City was nice...probably closer to what we want.
Definately don't want to be near the strip, but rural isn't us either. See reply to Laura. Thanks again for your imput, it all helps!!!

If at or near 55 there are a couple of Sun Cities in Vegas. All are a suitable distance to the strip.

There are two in Henderson...Sun City Anthem and Sun City MacDonald Ranch. Sun City Anthem is larger and at a higher price point...though the range is wide.

There is also Sun City Summerlin which is also well off the strip to the west. Similar pricing to Anthem.

I prefer Sun City Summerlin...higher and cooler and generally upwind of the dust and smog that hits the valley on still days. It is also larger and somewhat better in facilities. The bad news is it is older. Both are nice.

Both have extensive faciiities, golf, clubs, cards, hiking, food etc. The have one of almost everything.

There are three or four other smaller senior communities as well. In general all are in the outer rim of the city well distant from the strip.

Dear Madjoe,

The Henderson Multigenerational Center has lots of fun classes and programs for seniors.

I'm not a senior but I take Yoga at the Henderson Multigenerational Center once a week on Wednesday mornings. Six classes cost $35.00.

This month, our utility bill was around $77.00.

We use 21st century (21st.com) for car insurance and the rates are reasonable.

For the cost of living is quite reasonable.
