Does anybody know what percentage of it is tourism? I recently found out that only 20% of Orlando's economy is tourism and am curious to know what percentage it is for Vegas? Does anybody know?

i don't have #s, but based on the almost weekly reports we get about X amount of visitors into the airport & the amount of # generated by gaming & the hotel occupancy rates.....i'm going to guess it's WAY more than 20%

I dont have official numbers either davy but......its far more then 20%...without tourism there is no need for an auto dealer zzor a drug store or a grocery store Bussard will probably have the most accurate extimate

These sorts of surveys and studies are always skewed to the answer the researchers hope to get. The economic concepts of substitution and multipliers are very difficult to define properly. For example if blackjack dealers didn't have casinos to deal in they most likely could do something else. But how many blackjack dealers would even be in the area if casinos ddnt exist? These answers come down to assumptions which can be totally biased.

the strip isn't a single employer or facility, Disney World, at least of the sake of this discussion, is. Take away all of Orlandos major theme parks and hotel, which go significantly beyond Disney, the place would probably take a equally big hit to the Strip being magically erased.

Wow, almost 1/3 jobs in Las Vegas is tourism related. Orlando is closer to 1/5

Some cities surprised me on that list. Why is Detroit on there?

And Von, you're right without Disney World, Orlando would do just fine but the outlying communities would greatly suffer. Especially Osceola, Lake, and Polk Counties where a majority of tourism employees live. A lot of them live in these rural suburbs because you can buy a 5,000 sq ft hours for $150,000 and that same house in Orlando would cost double

The difference in Orlando's and Las Vegas's economic recovery has a lot to do with Orlando being more diversified.
In July 2012, unemployment in Orlando was 9.1 vs. 12.9 in Las Vegas - big difference.

The non reported--illiict--economy in LV is pretty high and largely based upon tourism too.

Detroit has many conventions and some casinos. They also benefit from cross border traffic with Canada.
