Next Sunday the 22 I will be picking up by brother from the airport I will be comming from Columbia MO are there any good BBQ or Texmex style restaurants close by or on the router. We do not want to have to go to the center on town to find a restaurant.

Abuelo’s was good the one time I went there. There’s a Smokehouse BBQ. I was there last summer and it was decent.

Might as well try it. I’ve never been there, but it has great reviews.

Edit - looks like they are closed on Sundays.

I second Smokehouse or Abuelos. They aren’t city-wide category killers but perfectly acceptable.

If you go to Smokehouse get a Crispy.

If you are interested in other types of restaurants there are a ton of them in the vicinity of I-29 and M-152. But since you specifically asked about BBQ and TexMex, Smokehouse and Abuelos are your best bets. The very best BBQ and TexMex in Kansas City will require a trip to the center of the city.

If it’s any sort of recommendation, that Smokehouse and Abuelos are both on my regular rotation of Friday night dinner places.

The Northland is severely lacking in good BBQ being a resident here. Smokehouse is decent I guess but If I'm paying decent amount of money for BBQ, I wouldn't go there. Best spots are in downtown (or near), KCK, and Johnson County. It's not just BBQ, it's the culinary scene up here as a whole.

If you can wait about an hour after leaving the airport you could stop at Bates City BBQ. It is just off I-70 and just east of the Metro area.

The best way to the airport from Columbia is 70 right to 29. Which will take you right past downtown. Why not just grab some good bbq at Jack Stack or hit up one of the many restaurants on the west side? It will literally be five minutes out of the way.

If you want any place to stop in the Northland, you don't want to take 435 anyway, it's rural or industrial nearly the entire way to the airport and you won't have any choices along the route. You will want to take 70 to 29 and find something along 29. Or at the very least take 70 to 435 to 152 which will give you some options.

Check out Luna Azteck off 64th and I-29 if you do want something up north. I-70 east of the stadiums has places too that would be about the same as what is up north. Jose Peppers of 169 and Briarcliff might work too.
