Soon I'll be taking a job on the very south side of Leavenworth and I wanted to get some thoughts and ideas on what seemed like a reasonable commute and locale for me to live. I'd like to stay within the KC Metro as I'm still young and single, but I also dont want a commute that will make me despise my life either. Currently I've been looking at the West End City Center apartments as a nice compromise with around a 30 minute commute and yet close to some social attractions. Any suggestions out there for a renter?

While Leavenworth is part of the KC metro, it's quite isolated from metro KC too. It’s sort of off the grid a bit.

Even a decent suburban area will put you in western Lenexa or the Northland of kcmo and about a 30-40 minute commute. If you want suburbs, you may as well just try to find something in western KCK near the speedway. There is not much out there though.

You can drive from downtown KCMO to Leavenworth in 30 minutes. There is very little traffic going into the city from 70 on the KS side (it’s the least populated corridor of the metro) and you would be going against it. So it would be a wide open commute.

I would take a serious look at central kansas city, mo or I think you might be bored out of your mind and annoyed in some of these cheaply built suburban apartment complexes that are in the middle of nowhere. Lenexa “city center” is in the middle of nowhere too, but you would be close to Shawnee Mission Park which is a great park for biking etc.

Young and single... I would live in the city. It would be the same commute and you would enjoy KC much more. If you do go suburban, may as well skip the commute and find something in Leavenworth/Lansing or maybe Platte City, MO or Tiffany Springs.

^I agree with all of this. Traffic out of the downtown core isn't significant and even living in most suburbs is going to take you almost just as long anyway.

What's your budget going to be?

IMO The Plaza or Westport is the only real place for young and singles. I would also offer that KC is not a very large city and it has pretty good highways which allow you to get from one end to the other with out alot of hassle almost anytime of day.
Probably a lot of the traffic out of JOCO is going east in the morning so traveling north up the 7-73-169
corridor should be easy. Many of the home owners in Western Wyandotte County are keeping apartment complexes out of their back yards so some of most convient areas around the race track are not going to have apartments.
