We need your advice......

My husband and I are considering relocating from our home in Michigan to the Jacksonville/ St. Augustine area. We've also looked into the Sarasota/ Tampa/ Clearwater area but my husband isn't so keen on the Gulf Coast because of hurricanes! I have family in St. Augustine and we've heard nothing but good things about the city......

Anyway, I'm trying to do as much research as possible but it's so hard to believe what you read. Our main focus is our 2 small children. We want nothing but the best for them. We want to be sure that the area we move to is safe, has good schools, centrally located, etc. We aren't too concerned with living right in the city, then again, we don't want to commute very far either for jobs. Where we live now, we usually have to commute about 30-40 minutes. We also plan on renting when we first move. Any suggestions on good areas to live? I also read a lot about Palm Coast but I'm under the impression that it's more of a retirement area??? I could be wrong.

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

The usuals with children would be Ponte Vedra Beach, Intracoastal West, Clay County or Mandarin.

I would check out Fleming Island....the schools are great, people are friendly and it's about 40 minutes to downtown Jax and about 45 minutes to St. Augustine. We moved from PHila. about 3 yrs. ago and we love it here!!! Good luck wherever you decide to go. If you need a realtor, I have a friend that's knows JAX real well since she's a local southern gal....great to work with, etc. If you have one, that's fine too. Like to help out where I can.

What do you want to be centrally located to? Consider that Jacksonville alone is 840 square miles - that's more land area than L.A. - and that's not even including St. John's county, Clay county, etc. Until you are here, you can't imagine how spread out this area is. You want to know where you'll be spending your time so you can locate yourself within a reasonable distance from those locations....otherwise you'll be spending all your time driving in your car .

Commute should be a big consideration....do you know where you'll be working yet? Was your 30-40 minute commute acceptable, or do you want something shorter (and if so, how much shorter?)?

What kind of neighborhood are you looking for (aside from the usual "safe, great schools, etc.")? New? Established? Amenities? Beach proximity? Budget?

Just read in a Tampa Bay Forum that Palm Coast crime is at a high rise...Just helping as you said you have kids and that is your sole direction...

Haven't been to Jacksonville, but am thinking of relocating there myself from the Keys to save some money live cheaply, and hit the road next year early on to Chicago or Denver. Any help (not to detract from the poster) would be great also...

Good luck with your move!

Wow 840 sq miles! Sheesh, that is crazy...why so spread out? we aren't in the west!

Through the wonderful, world wide web, I was able to talk with a young, married couple just as my husband and myself. they too relocated from the midwest to palm coast and have no regrets. they highly recommend the relocation. of course, everyone is going to have a difference of opinions. thank you so much though, for your insite on crime on the rise. I will take that into consideration. It's funny though, I live in a small town now... I'm talking 1 traffic light, Maybe 1500 people, graduated with a class of 55-60..... Any place we relocate to will have a higher crime rate than this place! LOL!

As for moving to the midwest... I hate it! I use to LOVE the winters. But as I get older, the less fun it is. And I swear, every year they get longer. don't leave the Keys.... what a dream to live there! My grandparents go down there every winter and stay longer and longer every year. I've been down to visit them a few times and Love it there. Very expensive I imagine!

Smile Consider Ponte Vedra

Hi,

I read your questions and thought I would throw in my two cents. I am a Realtor and a native of Jacksonville. I live in Ponte Vedra/Palm Valley with two children ages 3 and 7. I think this is a great place to live, more like a small town than Jacksonville. Although, there are parts of Jax that are similar. I think the main thing that a Realtor would want to know is what price range home do you want to rent or buy? That would help narrow down the options for you. By the way, Ponte Vedra is also close to St. Augustine. I would be happy to email you some options and info on schools if you like. The schools are great in St Johns county as well. Good luck!

Linda

Public Schools choices would include St. Johns County and Clay County. Private schools are also very good in the area if you like that route. Bolles has their main campus in Jacksonville.

Many good areas in Jacksonville, St. Johns, Palm Valley, Ponte Vedra. In PV your avg. home is going to be over 400K. Not sure what your budget is for your new home.

Good Luck with your decision.
