I remember driving further down the highway when I got out of Pony Creek. And I came across a large body of water/pond that was just off the highway. It had a trail/elevated ridge of green grass right in the middle of the huge pond/body of water that stretched ahead into the dense woods. The trail circled around out of the other side of the woods. It wasn’t very long. I also saw people fishing. But I don’t know the name or location.

I know the man made lake and park you're talking about. It's up the hill about 1 1/2 miles driving east on Hwy. 34 from the I-29 exit on the south side of the highway. There's a little park there as well with historical markers explaining the history of the Loess Hills and the original Indian tribe that lived there. I remember reading on one of those markers that this tribe is thought to have moved west and later became the Pawnee.

I'll see if I can find the name.

Updated: I looked up the lake/park. It's called Mile Hill Lake

The lake is like stock ponds and rivers all over the state of Iowa. Due to the rolling hills (see another thread) they dam up a draw, creek, or river and you have an "instant" lake. There are very few natural lakes in the state, most of which are along the northern border by Minnesota (land of 10,000 lakes) such as the Iowa Great Lakes, Storm Lake, and Clear Lake.
