Yoast's Wordpress SEO Plugin is suggesting that images in my posts have the post name as the alt tag of the image to maximize SEO.

To me this seems counter productive, the images are related to the post, but should be differentiated slightly from that post.

IE, Post name is "Ghost town of XXXX." Images Titles and Alt tages are "XXX Ghost Town General Store," "XXX Ghost Town Barn."

What is your guys's general opinions on this?

My opinion is to use the tag as intended so handicap people know what the image is, using something other than that will only confuse them. Use a short description of what it actually is.

I think google looks at the alt tags in image searches.
I always use them. Can't hurt. Might help.
