I'm in the market to buy a house. Are there any major differences between owning a house in Harris County vs Brazoria County? Is windstorm insurance required in Harris County? Tax rate about the same in both counties? Any info on comparing the two is greatly appreciated!

The only thing that I know is Brazoria County is a lot smaller than Harris County, which is pretty obvious.

also, the pizza down here isn't that great.
just kidding, i like your screen name. I'm guessing you are talking about Pearland. One McMansion is about the same as another I'd guess. But if you are talking about the COUNTRY part of Brazoria County, there is a HUGE difference, culturally. I guess I'm not answering your "tax rate" questions or your "windstorm" but you said "any info!" and let me tell you, Brazoria County (except Pearland) is about as rural as you can get, and Houston is about as urban as you can get. And then there's the pizza

I'm in ''coastal'' Harris (~8 miles from the bay) and windstorm is not a separate policy. Wind is rolled into one HO policy, but if you get damage by "cyclonic" wind (hurricanes and/or tornados) then the deductible is 2% instead of 1%. (YMMV with that.)

It is also starting to get almost prohibitively expensive, with most companies no longer writing new policies. The ones that are writing them are charging $3,000+ on a 2000-2500 sq ft, $200-250k, 15 yr old home. But if you're lucky enough to get grandfathered into a company long term, it will still run nearly $2,400 a year.

As for taxes, it depends. If you're in Houston city limits zoned to HISD, 2.6%... a good school district, 2.9%. Older, unincorporated areas would be a bit lower.

Someone else will have to chime in on Brazoria. It's actually a big county area-wise. Things might be different for Pearland vs Freeport.

That's pretty common in Houston. I learned about that after talking to my agent after Ike.

Some things I can think of which haven't been mentioned:

Auto insurance is cheaper in Brazoria over Harris.

Your chance of being called for jury duty is higher in Brazoria.

Property taxes in pearland are very high, to much but property value is increasing very quick so if you are looking for investment me to pearland, Alvin is still affordable and is next to friendswood and pearland the 2 best school district in Houston, yes better then overrated Katy, manvel is also a option close to 288 and lower taxes, but be carful with the flood zone,

Brazoria County is only 200 square miles smaller than Harris County. They're practically the same size, so you're wrong.
