(I'm the same poster who asked about seeing bee hives a while back)..

I'm doing a "unit" with my kids about where our food comes from. We made yogurt, cheese, bread, tortillas, etc. But I'd love to have them visit a dairy farm or chicken farm.. or any kind-of factory that makes food products... We will do a you-pick fruit farm soon too (if you have suggestions please tell me!).

Does anyone have any ideas near or in Houston? We're in Sugar Land but I don't mind driving. Thanks!

I am so tempted to say something I really shouldn't.

I know. I have a good sense of humor and I need a laugh so go ahead and say it as long as it bumps up my message so someone can tell me where.

When you say "your kids" do you mean your kids or school kids? A class of kids are usually welcome to visit dairy farms on school trips

Why not get on the phone and make a couple calls. Start with the Texas Association of Dairymen. Try the Central Texas Dairy Goat Association. Finally why not check out the Texas 4-H Youth Development Program.

Try the oil ranch in Hockley. I'd call first.

Oil Ranch | Ranch Activities (http://www.oilranch.com/ranch_activities.php - broken link)

For "pick your own" the King's Orchard is the best but I'm not sure what's available right now.

Froberg's Vegtable Farm has u pick strawberries in the springtime. On the same road there is a dairy, I don't know if it is open to the public.

I'd be curious to know if you found a place. I remember going to a farm as a preschooler and getting to milk the cows. Gross but a cool memory none the less.

It would be neat to give my 4 yr old the memory too.

Try Dewberry Farm. They are located in Katy and have field trips that you can plan for.

Take the kids for a ride on the Sam Houston at the Port. They can see how their food and other goods get into the country.

You may get a tour of a dairy but I seriously doubt they will let the kids milk a cow. Too much liability involved.

Maybe look into area petting farms, rather than dairys? We had a petting farm near us when we lived in Michigan that had traditional farm animals and gave demonstrations of farm work (milking cows, etc).

Another idea (if it's for a classroom of kids): I remember when I was in K or 1st grade, my teacher took a wooden sawhorse, decorated it to look like a cow, and hung a latex glove filled with milk from the middle of it. There were holes in the fingertips so that each of us could come up with a bucket and learn how to milk a cow. Just an idea if the real life demo doesn't pan out.
