I'm debating moving to the Houston area. However, the more I hear about The Woodlands, TX the more it seems like a really great place. I have 2 kids-they will be 5 and 8, so of course great school districts are a must, housing that's not too expensive would be great, either a rental home or apartment. I'll be working for the school district as a teacher. Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
There are dozens of school districts in the greater Houston area so you will need to identify the various school districts in and around the city, suburbs and outlying communities. For example, Houston Independent School District does not include The Woodlands or much of the area south of The Woodlands (Spring, Klein, Aldine, Cypress-Fairbanks).

You DO NOT want to be in the 77051 zip code despite the earlier suggestion. Especially being single with two kids and not a native Houstonian. That zip encompasses Sunnyside, one of the worst crime and drug-riddled 'hoods in the US.

Best advice I can give anyone who posts these sorts of questions is to:

1) Finance your own weekend or (even better) week-long trip to Houston to check out the various ISDs or communities in the Houston area
2) If you cannot afford to lodging and transportation, fall back on family. Stay with them while you scout the area
3) Research Research Research. Do some online advanced searching about the city, the climate, politics, real estate trends, etc.
4) Only resort to City Data forums after you have exhausted all other resources. Case in point: You will have someone suggesting a dangerous neighborhood for a single woman.
5) Ignore all the hype articles of ANY city. Houston real estate rapidly adjusted to being undervalued for a long time. When publications put out reports touting how great Houston is, many uninformed people get confused. This city is not as cheap or a good value like it once was. Compared to the east or west coast, probably still a good value. Coming from Memphis, not so much.
6) Having your own transportation is a MUST.

There are homes in the Woodlands for less than $300K. Also, the schools in the zip codes you posted are atrocious. Pearland, Woodlands, and Sugar Land would provide much better schools for her kids.

Yea those large industrial sites west of 288 have very low crime, despite being potentially hazardous and atrocious to look at. There's just too many other zips that provide s better quality of life for her given budget to suggest 77045 or 77051, but I guess it depends which school she'd be assigned.
