Morning everyone, my wife has a Job opportunity in Pasadena. It's likely that we will be moving from NY within the next 6 months. I have some questions I'm hoping some of you could help me with. Full disclosure, I haven't actually been to Houston yet so any information I have is basically just from the internet.

1. Is traffic really that bad? My wife travels 7-10 miles to work each morning, this takes around 60 min. All my rush hour Google map searches show the same time frame or less for 30+ mile trips (eg. Sugarland to Pasadena).

2. We were thinking of shopping for homes in Sugarland, Katy, Cypress, and Jersey Village. Would a rush hour commute from some of these places be completely unrealistic?

3. Internet: Does extremely high speed internet exist in Houston? Its really hard to get info on this, and there are quite a few horror stories about FIOS/Frontier takeover. I have 75Mbps/75Mbps in NY and I was hoping something like this exists in Houston. If so any idea what locations are eligible?

I think you should put places like Clear Lake, Friendswood, Pearland, and League City on that list. The commute from those areas I listed will be much more tolerable than from the locations you list.

I can't help you on internet speed , I have no idea what my internet speed is but it does seem just fine...

If you live in a Comcast area, then yes, you can get speeds faster than 50mbps. If you're lucky enough to move to an ATT Uverse Gigapower area, then you're golden! I have ATT Uverse 45mb/10mb package.

Oh and as a NY'r myself, I miss FIOS.....no FIOS in Houston, this is ATT Country.

I live east of Jersey Village, the innermost suburb on your list, and while I think this area is great, I wouldn't recommend it for a commute to Pasadena. It takes me 35 minutes to get to Rice or the Med Center during morning rush hour and that's under 20 miles for me, only about halfway to Pasadena. Jack Lance is giving you good suggestions for nice areas in southeast Houston, and even commuting from areas in the northeast quadrant wouldn't be bad. That area would give you woodsier environs if that is your preference.

I live in Sugar Land and my commute to Pasadena area is about 30-40 min depending on traffic. The upside for me is traffic both ways is steady moving. Unless there is an accident or really stupid folks then I am constantly moving. I made it this morning in about 30 minutes. As far as internet, I have comcast and get 100mbps for about $70 with HBO Go. Clear lake would be closer, but then you're in traffic with everyone else commuting into Houston.

I should also note, I am using the Beltway (Toll road) to and from work. Only way to commute IMO.

Depends on where in Pasadena the job is. One could get form Clear Lake to Pasadena by driving north on Space Center.

That is a valid point.

Sugar Land might be doable but the other three are certainly not. I would recommend Clear Lake or Pearland for a Pasadena commute. You might also check out the area east of downtown or "eado" as the real estate gods have decided to call it. There are some nice places there and that puts you pretty close to a lot of activities.
