A house that has system from 1992 (Forced air, gas heat, electric cool). I want to replace it completely. I don't think duct etc. needs to be replaced or anything. House is 1800 sf with no garage. I live in Gaithersburg MD. I am just trying to get an idea.

Thanks

Call some local contractors. There are still way too many variables for anyone to ballpark what such a system replacement would entail.

standard flue gas updraft furnace, lower seer a/c, recognized name brand equipment (eg Rheem)...
nothing fancy or extra added, reasonable access to work, minimum sheet metal mod's, etc...
$3-4000

but few (if any) HVAC contractor's will sell it to you like this.
good luck.

Hmmm...I had to pay $15,000 for a new Lennox furnace and 3-ton 13ACX air conditioner last year. No ductwork, just the furnace and compressor and, of course, installation (furnact in the attic, compressor outside) for a 1,200 sq ft house. I've always wondered if I was overcharged.

I know that my a-c company is more expensive than many, if not most, others in my area. But they have 24-hour service -- and they really do come out at all hours -- which is very important to me.

I bought a Lennox, 95% efficient, modulating heat, variable speed gas furnace & a single stage 13 SEER central A/C unit last June. Since my old furnace was original to the 32 year old home, it required different venting for the new one. Also, I previously had a roof mounted swamp cooler and no A/C. So that installation was another chunk of labor. I got a power humidifer, air filter something something, got my ducts cleaned, an additional cold air return installed and my swamp cooler removed from my roof and my roof patched. I paid a little over $11,000 but after rebates & tax credits, I paid $7,800. My home is a 1550 sq ft split entry.

I understood that my power bill would go up since I've added a humidifier and central a/c. But I was expecting my gas usage to go down...I was wrong. The effiency is in the way the gas burns and not necessarily a cost savings incentive.
