We're relocating and looking at houses to buy. Every one of them nearly looks identical with the baseboard and door frames painted white and the walls painted beige or gray. Wherever we move, the white trim will probably have to remain, but the walls will be repainted.
My style is very modern minimalist, and I generally like black and white, but I'm not going to paint the walls black.
Therefore, what color(s) would you suggest to go with the white trim?
Beige neutrals are mostly used for mass appeal. If your style is contempo/modern, and if you are going to add pops of color with art and accessories, then go with a cool gray tone on the walls. Its a contemporary color and will read nicely against the white trim. Test any paint in your house before you buy it. Gray has the tendency to go blue and is affected by the type of light you are using. Look at your samples under the lights you will use in the evening as well as natural daylight. Another option is to go with textured wall covering such as hemp (grasscloth) for an accent wall. Textures are great in modern spaces and any type of natural material is good, like brick, stone, hemp, wood panels, etc...
I HATE white trim with colored walls. It always looks like a suburban apartment to me. I have modern/minimalist decor and most of the walls are white with white trim --all flat paint. I have one wall painted grey and painted the trim grey also. The only other trim that seems to look right is stained wood. It goes good with mid-century modern style.
Primer gray. I don't know what they call it, but it's the color of gray primer.
I had to prime my walls with it because I was going to use a deep green, and the color, together with white moldings, was beautiful. However, it wasn't a color I could be happy living with day in and day out, so I continued with the deep green.
You have a lot of options. I agree with the deep gray color. I think that might give you the feel you are looking for. You could also go with a soft yellow for some warmth if you want to go that route. I really like the beige/black combination though. You could offset the beige color with some colorful area rugs, pillows, art, etc. It's a good background color that won't compete with bold colors elsewhere.

I too would also go with the grayish color walls, but why cant the trim be painted the same color?
