Well, I just paid off my new car and am afraid to ship it. I dont want to buy a $1000 beater over there just to break down. Should i just put it on the boat or car shop there?

Where are you coming from? If you can get to one of the Pacific ports and ship for $1075 (We used Pasha and were happy with them) - then ship it.
Your car is paid for, my answer would be different if you were bringing car payments with you. Hopefully you took care of it mechanically during the last three years. That would give you peace of mind. Especially as a woman, you don't want to be broken down alone the road somewhere. Regardless of whether your on the islands or the mainland. Getting road service out takes more than the usual 30 minutes guarantee you might be use to on the mainland.
An Element is a Honda, isn't it? There is a lot of support for Hondas around here with mechanics and parts available, so if it's a car you like, bring it along.
If it was my car and paid off, I'd ship it. I would think an Element would have some value
in Hawai'i. It should be able to carry short boards if the rear seats are folded down. The
vehicle has a lot of cargo space available for vehicle its size. Check Craig's list or other
ads in Hawai'i for used Elements. I wouldn't be too surprised if your 2008 Element has
retained more of its original value in the Hawai'i market compared to the market in the
Seattle area.
It is probably worth more here. Only use one of the 3 main shippers because everyone else is a broker.
Matson, Pasha, Horizon. The price will be the same for all three.
Hi kittyrocky,
Why are you afraid to ship your car? Cost? Damage?
Cost - The cost of shipping will be less than or equal to buying a beater, but with shipping you'll have the car you like and are used to driving. You know exactly what's wrong/working on your own car, and you can re-establish insurance with a local broker.
Damage - Not to worry, we shipped our cars out with absolutely no problem. Other than friends scaring us with photos of ships at sea during a storm, we thought the process was basically flawless. You can't have anything in the car, and the tank has to be pretty much dry-empty. The shipping companies don't want the extra weight or risk of gasoline on board.
Wow good advice! I didnt even think about some of those things. I guess I was worried because of damage/inconvenience. I didnt want to arrive before/ after my car either. I do love it so guess ill bring it. time to get a washing! Jill
Also..i guess.. how necessary is it to have a car in maui? i have a 5 and 2 yr old. Can I keep them entertained in the area around the house? WE are staying somewhere near lahaina.
Yeah i guess some cars are worth more now than they were in 06' -08'. Amazing! not enough used cars for people to buy now and they cant get loans. sheesh. Better keep mine!

"Needing" a car in Maui or anywhere else certainly depends on your wants, expectations and lifestyle. Public transport in Maui can best be described as exceptionally modest. Living "somewhere near" Lahaina doesn't tell us much. You might want to drill a little deeper with respect to exactly where "somewhere near" Lahaina is situated. Personally, I consider Maui rural. Not as rural as Molokai
or the Big Island but certainly not as urban as Honolulu and much of Oahu.
