I'm currently in the process of wringing out an AR 5.56/.223 build on a Bushy/DPMS hybrid platform with pleasing results. At 688 yards, by our range finder, on a 30x30 plate, shes holding 12.85 inches, by my RCBS calipers, with 62 gr M855. At 200 yards known distance, last weekend against my buddy's Wilson AR she shot 2.00 dead with Hornady factory Vmax non moly while his best came with 75 gr Black Hills mchp at 2.75. Since I only have around 200 smackers invested in this rifle, in terms of actual cash outlay, I'm pleased as a hog in a puddle of mud mid July. My buddy is now considering a .308 build ala LR/AR 10 for more extreme type shooting at those distances of legend started by the likes of Carlos Hathcock and so many other larger than life figures. So, to all my fellow shooters (those of my generation having grown up on horror stories of the AR platform in combat) I will say I am pleased that RD has started to develop the potential of the AR platform and squeeze out the bugs. Or perhaps a bit bettern that. Any thoughts/experiences on precision AR builds/buys? Primary purpose of my particular AR has yotes at 300 plus in mind as a go to varminter. She's running the stock chrome lined 1-9(havn't seen the need to change it) Bushy A2 lower with a DPMS slick side A3 upper, GGG free float forend and platform grip with a Bushnell 4-12 sportview on the rails of the upper. Trigger mod is in the near future I still have the original mil spec group right now, my buddy's Wilson has a NICE Timney that I'd love on my piece. AR folks? anyone?

Have you tried the new 60 grain Black Hills round for same platform?

For the AR 10 platform look at the LaRue, or the Noveske if funds allow.

I own five AR's, one of them being an Armalite AR-10. I have a 22 lr upper that isn't at all accurate and a 450 Bushmaster upper I haven't shot yet. I have three 223 uppers and they all seem to have about the same accuracy, which is nothing fancy, but better than either of my two Mini 14 and 30 Rugers. I haven't been that concerned about the accuracy of the 223 uppers because I didn't get them for accuracy. For coyotes I usually use either a 204 Ruger in a heavy barreled Savage, or an Encore in either 204, 223, or 22-250. I did put a JP trigger in one of my AR lowers recently, and plan to install three more of them in other lowers. That trigger did help my shooting with that particular lower. There are a lot of after market parts for these guns, so they are fun to own. The AR-10 shoots very well and is enjoyable to shoot. It's stock trigger isn't bad, but any stock trigger could probably be improved. As far as 308 goes, don't overlook Springfield's Squad Scout MIA.

Shooting A 223 Rifle To A Mile Accurately

Here's an interesting write-up on a custom .223 bolt gun for extreme long range shooting.

Take it with a grain of salt, of course. The internet, like the hunting lodge, is full of liars.

I was rather trying to stay within more realistic performance in any AR platform from...oh..say 204-308. I honestly did not envision any chambering to exceed the magic 1000 yard stick and that range being in 308 chamberings. I don't expect to put my223 AR on live targets past 400 yards and this only if a clean s'not exists. Now...steel or paper is a different matter ....

I really posted that because I had always believed that after a bullet is flying at transonic speeds (around 600 yards for .223, I think) your accuracy becomes significantly more "musket-like", but apparently (so says the internet) there are ballistics scientists who say this isn't necessarily so. Just thought it may be an interesting read.

If you have an AR that will print a 2" group at 200 yards from a stock configuration, that's a pretty darned straight shootin' rifle and one I would be comfortable shooting out past 300 at critters. As you already mentioned, the most bang for your buck is probably going to be at the trigger group. I've never met a stock AR trigger that I liked and could shoot reasonably accurately without intense concentration.

My next upper will be chambered in 7.62 x 39. Think I will go with a 16 inch barrel as well.

+1... that round is just not designed to do the job past 800-1000 yards MAXIMUM. Build a .308 instead.

You should see significant improvements in 16", 20" and 24" barrels as well. The new GI round was an improvement on the M118LR or (Long Range) match round. It's really good stuff. The only way you should be able to beat it, is to LYO. That's load your own! The heavier bullets (upper 60's and 70's) probably Nosler would be your best bet. Custom Competition and others. Powder is up to you. Try several for best results. Adjust your C.O.L. as needed. Good luck!
Oh....im certainly rolling my own in this project. First bullet choice is the 55 Vmax powders to start are blc2 imr 4064 and one other id have to look in the cabinet to remember...335 I think. The vmax has been a tack driver at 200 yards for me shooting sub mow and vaporizing 10 clays in a row one for one. Minute of jackrabbit at 200 yards will do for starters.
