My apologies if this is a repeat thread.. but just this weekend I was at the store and saw tons of fresh fruit. Since I'm really hitting my "losing weight" program hard, I thought it would be perfect for me to get some fruit and cut it up, so I'd have it to snack on instead of the regular chips or crackers. I got soooo excited right up until I realized I had no idea how to pick ripe/sweet fruit. I know there's little placards above the fruit, but they aren't as helpful as they seem. I also made the serious mistake of asking the guy that was stocking the fruit... a shoulder shrug gave me all the answer I needed.
I guess my question is how can I tell riper fruit from the less rip for the following:
For honeydews and cantaloupes, gently press the stem, and if it doesn't "give", it's not ripe yet. If it's a little soft there, buy it,but if you press it gently and your finger goes through the fruit, don't buy it and run like hell.
Cantalope...press the blossom end gently and sniff...if it smells like a wonderful cantalope, it's ripe. If there's just a little smell, it's not ripe yet. You can buy it and let it sit a day or two until it's ripe.
Which is the blossom end? It's opposite the stem end, which is the dark green depression.
Honeydew...same, but it has a much more delicate aroma so it's a bit harder to tell.
Watermelon...the "thump" rules. If it sounds hollow, it's too ripe. If there's no reverb, it's not ripe enough. It should make a good solid but not too solid sound.
It's so hard to figure out I just buy the ones that are cut in half - or slices - that you can see!
