Not sure, but they've been closed for at least 7 or 8 years now, and maybe longer.

First it was state budget cuts, then it was fire danger

All over the country rest area's are closed. Just saving money.... Truckdrivers have to park at truckstops with a Mc Donald's. It is all about the money, like everything else.

I see them open lately but just for big rigs. I think it was budget cuts that closed them originally. I thought it made the state look bad for all the people traveling to the Grand Canyon.

I've been here 25 years and sure, there going to say "budget constraints," but I always thought the reason was because Flagstaff is a tourist town and they don't want RVs and other vehicles camping there overnight when a Flagstaff motel is only 20 miles away. The tourist industry is our prime business here and we/they do not want nearby rest areas taking away any of their business. We need to keep the motels/hotels filled as best as possible without a nearby rest area contributing to any loss.

Isn't the purpose of owning a RV to avoid hotel/motels and live out of the RV.

Yup....at costly RV campgrounds. They cost almost as much as a motel room. One of the main reasons I gave up RVing.
